This fabric Easter basket makes a pretty decoration, or place for the Easter bunny to leave his treats! You can make one in an evening using my free sewing pattern.
Spring is nearly here, and I can hardly wait! Daffodils are budded out and ready to bloom any day now. With spring on my mind, I made a pretty little fabric Easter basket. Fill it with some paper grass and some small plastic Easter eggs and it’s a cute decoration for your home. Or the kids can use it to put their dyed eggs in, and wait for the Easter bunny to leave his treats!

I made mine from a couple of 1930s repro fabric prints. I thought the soft colors and vintage style were perfect for a little fabric basket. And I happened to have the fabrics in my stash already, how lucky is that?
And while mine is made from sweet pastels, the simple design of this basket would also be cute made from brighter fabrics. All you need is two coordinating quilting cottons, plus some duck fabric and fusible webbing for interfacing.
The duck fabric interfacing helps the basket hold its shape without adding bulk. The thickness of the fabric, plus the fusible webbing used to fuse it to the back of the fabric, lends a nice body to the fabric. (Be sure to read the cutting instructions before cutting out your pattern pieces!)
This basket comes together pretty quickly. You can make one start to finish in just an evening. The contrast cuff around the outside is a nice finish – and an easy way to cover raw edges without having to turn anything right side out or hand sew.
Finished dimensions are approximately 6 ½” diameter. (The sides are slightly angle so the diameter at the top is actually 7”.) The basket itself is 4” tall. With handle, it is 10” tall.
Supplies
Main Fabric (Basket Outer) – ½ yard quilting cotton
Lining – ½ yard quilting cotton
Interfacing – 1/2 yard duck cloth canvas. A light neutral color like natural, ecru, or white will be best so it won’t show through your Main or Lining fabric.
Fusible Webbing – ½ yard

Prep / Cutting Instructions
Before you cut any of your pattern pieces, you’ll need to interface the Main Fabric with the duck cloth. The Main Fabric is the one you’ll use for the Exterior. This layer of duck cloth will give the Main Fabric the body it needs to hold its shape.
The easiest way to do this is to use fusible webbing to fuse the layers of fabric together BEFORE cutting out the pattern pieces.
For the Bottom piece – Cut pieces of Main Fabric and duck cloth 8” x 8” and follow fusible webbing manufacturer’s instructions to fuse these layers WST. Cut the Bottom pattern piece from this interfaced fabric.
For the Side pieces – Cut pieces of Main Fabric and duck cloth 11” wide x 13 ½” tall and follow fusible webbing manufacturer’s instructions to fuse these layers WST. Cut the Side pattern pieces from this interfaced fabric.
Cut basket Bottom & Side pattern pieces as usual from Lining Fabric (no interfacing needed).
In addition to the printed pattern pieces, you’ll also need to cut the following pieces:
Handle – 1 piece, 4” x 16” from Main Fabric AND 1 piece, 3” x 16” from duck cloth. Don’t fuse them together yet.
Cuff – 2 pieces, 4” x 12 1/8” from Lining Fabric
Sew the Basket Exterior and Lining
Place the two Main Fabric Side pieces RST. Sew together at sides with ¼” seam allowance.
Press seam allowances open.
Pin this piece around the Bottom piece, RST and matching notches. Sew with ¼” seam allowance.
With the thick fabric and the curves, this can be kind of a tricky seam. Just take it slow and work your way around the circle.
Trim seam allowance to 1/8” to reduce bulk.
Repeat the steps above with the Lining fabric to create the basket Lining.
Place Lining inside the Exterior, wrong sides together, matching side seams. Baste the two layers together around the top edge with 1/8” seam allowance.
Sew the Handle
Take the Handle pieces you cut earlier (4” x 16” of Main Fabric, 3” x 16” of duck cloth). Use fusible webbing to fuse that duck cloth down the center of the Main Fabric, wrong sides together.
Press ½” to the back along the long sides.
Fold the Handle in half lengthwise.
Sew down both sides with 1/8” seam allowance.
Center the ends of the Handle centered over the side seams on the inside (Lining side) of the basket, raw edges aligned. Baste in place with 1/8” seam allowance.
The illustration below is an overhead view of the basket.
Sew and Attach the Cuff
Place the Cuff pieces RST. Sew at both sides with ¼” seam allowance.
Fold the Cuff in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, creating a double-sided tube.
Place the Cuff inside the Basket, raw edges aligned and side seams matching. Sew around the top with ¼” seam allowance.
There will be a lot of layers where you’re sewing over the Handle, but take it slow and hand crank if necessary.
Flip the Cuff over the top edge of the Basket, so the raw edge is covered. Your fabric Easter basket is finished!
