The Best Thanksgiving Books for Kids

There are few things that I love more about holidays than reading the books in my holiday children’s book collection with my babies.  I love getting them off of the shelf, reading through them every year, adding to them as I find new treasures, and seeing the joy in my little ones’ eyes as they look/read through them on their own through the season.  I just LOVE it.  So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I made a list of my favorite books from my collection, for which I am enormously grateful.  Some are educational, some are just silly and fun, and some are a combo.  I hope that you enjoy them as much as we have!

T is for Turkey

A fun and simple rhyming book that tells the story of the first Thanksgiving, T is for Turkey: A True Thanksgiving Story, is a fun way to share a little history behind Thanksgiving.

Turkey Trouble

If you were a turkey, how would you disguise yourself? Turkey Trouble is a book all about a turkey who knows that Thanksgiving comes and that he better disguise himself or he might end up on the dinner table. The disguises he comes up with are funny and exciting for kids of all ages. The book lends itself to a fun and creative art activity where the kids can create a disguise for their turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving, Curious George

A large board book with charming, retro illustrations and simple poems about Thanksgiving.  Very cute and pleases kids from my two year old niece to my eight year old son.

This First Thanksgiving Day

A counting book about Pilgrim and Native American children preparing for the Thanksgiving feast.  A quick, but fun and educational, story.

An Outlaw Thanksgiving

A fun story about a stranded train that leads to a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner with infamous outlaws.  Based loosely on a true story.  (Gorgeous illustrations/paintings!)

If You Were a Kid at The First Thanksgiving

This book doubles as a fiction story about Pilgrim and Native American children AND a non-fiction book full of interesting facts and information.

Over the River: A Turkey’s Tale

Based on the song “Over the river, and through the woods . . .” this is a quick, fun read for the kiddos.

Thanks for Thanksgiving

A lovely look at gratitude and all that we have to be grateful for, presented with beautiful illustrations.  A quick read.

Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving

The remarkable true story of the lives of Squanto, the Native American hero that saved the Pilgrims lives by teaching them how to survive in the New World.  A wonderful telling of Squanto’s story.

The First Thanksgiving: A Lift-the-Flap Book

A darling board book, this is the perfect introduction to the story of Thanksgiving for little ones.

10 Fat Turkeys

A silly tale of 10 fat turkeys having fun and causing trouble.

A Plump and Perky Turkey

A clever turkey tricks the townsfolk who are trying to catch him for their Thanksgiving dinner.  Very silly and fun.

One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims

Based on the song “One little, two little, three little Indians . . .” this is a quick, fun read showing the process leading up to the first Thanksgiving feast.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
