Wristlet Key Fob and Card Wallet - Free Sewing Pattern

With the end of the school year nearing, this wristlet key fob and card wallet would make great gifts for your favorite teachers! Quick to make and always useful, they’re sure the please anyone on your gift list. I’ve got a tutorial and free sewing pattern below you can use to sew up key fobs and card wallets for everyone!

If you’re the parent of a school age child, then you know the month of May is a constant whirlwind of end of year performances, awards ceremonies and class parties. And then, all of a sudden, the school year is over and it’s teacher gift time. It would sneak up on me every year. And of course, since I loved to sew and make things, I wanted at least part of the teacher’s gifts to be handmade.

This simple wristlet key fob and credit card wallet makes the perfect teacher gift! Read on for the free pattern.

It’s a useful little combo that suits any style or personality. The key fob is an easy way for someone to keep their keys with them.

The little card wallet has an easy snap closure and two pockets on the inside to hold credit cards, ID, or a little folded money.

It attaches easily to the key fob with a swivel hook. And when the summer’s over and teachers are back to school, they can attach the wallet to their work lanyards.

Each piece of the set stands on its own and would make a nice little by itself. Or for a larger gift, make them both and tuck a gift card inside the wallet for a small treat!

If you’ve got a lot of gifts to make, one fat quarter of main fabric, lining, and pockets will give enough to make 3 key fob and card wallet sets with scraps left over.

All seam allowances ¼” unless otherwise stated. RST = right sides together.

How to Sew the Key Fob

Supplies

Quilting cotton – 1 piece, 4” wide x 10.5” tall

Fusible fleece – 1 piece, 1” wide x 10.5” tall

1 set key fob hardware

Press the fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Open out, and then press the sides to the middle.

Open out again. You should have a long rectangle with divided into 4 sections.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the fusible fleece rectangle down into one of the middle sections.

Fold the fabric back up along the creases, then top stitch down both sides close to the edge to make a strap.

Now, fold this strap in half to make a loop. Sew a basting seam across the ends to hold them together.

Place the ends of the loop into the clamp on the end of the keyfob hardware. Use pliers to close the clamp around the fabric. Place a piece of fabric between the pliers and the clamp to keep the pliers from denting or scratching the clamp.

If you’re having trouble keeping the fabric inside the clamp while working the pliers, use a little dab of hot glue to hold the fabric in place.

How to Sew the Card Wallet

Supplies

Main fabric – large scraps or fat quarter of quilting cotton

Lining fabric – large scraps or fat quarter of quilting cotton

Pocket fabric – large scraps or fat quarter of quilting cotton

Fusible fleece – large scraps

Lightweight fusible interfacing – large scraps

½” wide grosgrain ribbon or twill tape – 1 piece, 1 ½” long

½” wide swivel hook

½” snap set, metal or plastic

Card Wallet – Free Sewing Pattern

All seam allowances ¼” unless otherwise stated. RST = Right Sides Together

Prep

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the Exterior Interfacing (fusible fleece) to the back of the Exterior piece.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the Lining Interfacing and Flap Lining Interfacing (lightweight interfacing) to the backs of the Lining and Flap Lining pieces.

Sew the Wallet Interior

Press Pocket pieces in half.

Place Pocket pieces on each end of the Lining piece, right sides up and raw edges aligned.

Baste Pocket pieces in place along outside of Lining piece using a 1/8” seam allowance.

Sew the Flap Lining to one end of the Wallet Interior, RST.

Press seam open.

Sew the Wallet Exterior

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the stud half of the snap on the Exterior piece, where indicated on the Exterior pattern piece.

Thread the ribbon (or twill tape) through the swivel hook ring, bringing the ends together to create a loop.

Baste the ribbon loop to the bottom edge of the Exterior where marked on the pattern, with a 1/8″ seam allowance, raw edges aligned and right sides together.

Assemble the Wallet

Place the Exterior and Interior pieces RST. Sew around all 4 sides, leaving 2 ¼” open on one long side for a turning hole.

Clip corners and curves, then turn right side out. Press.

Press the seam allowance at the turning hole inward, so it’s even with the sewn edges.

Top stitch around the 4 sides with 1/8” seam allowance. This will close the turning hole.

Install socket side of snap on the flap, where indicated on the Exterior Interfacing pattern piece. The smooth side of the snap should be on the Exterior side of the flap, and the socket side on the Flap Lining.

(The snap placement is marked on this piece rather than the Exterior piece, because it’s the same size as the wallet once ¼” seams have been sewn all the way around.)
