Tired of searching for your AirPods in the bottom of your bag or backpack? This DIY keychain AirPods pouch is an easy sewing project that will keep them easy to find and always at hand.
I’ve had a pair of AirPods for a while now but I rarely have them with me when I need (or just want) them. The little case is just so small and so easily lost at the bottom of my bag. But this past weekend I made a little AirPods case that will change all that.
And I’ve got a free sewing pattern you can use to make one for yourself.
This small pouch is just the right size to hold a gen 2 AirPods case. A snap closure keeps them safe and secure, while a split ring makes it easy to attach them to a keychain.
A bit of fusible fleece between the fabric layers gives structure to the small pouch and also a bit of padding against bumps.
This is a quick project to sew. I was able to make mine in just 30 minutes and that includes cutting out the fabric. You can make one from a fat quarter or ¼ yard fabric ,or even large scraps.
This would make a great gift, especially for teens, teachers, or coworkers. Add in a matching DIY key fob to make it an even better gift!
This pattern is sized to fit a 2nd generation AirPods case. Finished dimensions are approximately 2″ wide x 7/8″ deep x 2 1/4″ tall.
Supplies
Quilting cotton – ¼ yard or large scraps
Fusible fleece – scrap
2” ribbon or twill tape, at least 3/8” wide
1” split ring
1 set of plastic snaps, ½” diameter
Snap setting tool

Prep
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the fusible fleece to the back of one of your Outer/Lining pieces. The piece you fuse the fleece to will be the Outer piece. The piece without fleece will be the Lining.
Sew the Keychain AirPods Pouch
Thread the ribbon (or twill tape) through the split ring and bring the ends together, creating a loop.
Place the ribbon loop (with split ring) along the right edge of the Outer piece, RST and raw edges aligned, and with the top of your ribbon at the place marked with a dot on the pattern piece.
Baste in place with 1/8” seam allowance.
Place the Outer and Lining pieces RST. Sew around all sides with a ¼” seam allowance, leaving roughly 1 ½” open between the notches marked on the pattern. This will be the turning hole.
Trim seam allowance with pinking shears, then clip corners. If you don’t have pinking shears you can trim the seam allowance with regular scissors and then clip the curved edges.
Give it a good press with the iron. Press seam allowances to the inside at the turning hole so the edge is even with the sewn edge.
Sew the hole closed with a seam close to the edge. This will end up on the inside of the pouch so no need to hand sew.
Fold the ribbon and split ring over to the inside of the pouch. Pin it in place so it stays there during the next couple of steps.
Now it’s time to sew the bottom and sides of the AirPods pouch. To do this you’ll fold up the bottom portion and sew it to the middle portion.
First fold the bottom left corner up at a 45 degree angle so the short edge at the bottom portion lines up with the side of the middle portion.
Sew that short side with a 1/8” seam allowance, starting at the folded (angled) edge and stopping 1/8” from the end and leaving the needle in the fabric.
Rotate the top layer 90 degrees, lining the edges up again. Continue sewing until the end of this side, backstitching at the end of the seam.
Repeat with the other side.
Turn right side out and you’ve got a little AirPods pouch! All you need to do now is install the snaps.
Following manufacturer’s instructions, install the stud half of the snap on the flap. Centered and with the bottom of the snap roughly 1/4“ from the bottom of the flap.
Now install the socket half of the snap on the front of the pouch. Fold the flap over to see where to place it so the halves of the snap meet up. For my pouch, the socket half of the snap was roughly 1/2“ down from the pouch opening.
Your Keychain AirPods Pouch is finished!

What generation or size airpods does this fit. Newer models are larger so just making sure it has enough room.

I made this to fit my 2nd gen airpods, but I think it would work for newer standard models with some small adjustments. My finished dimensions were approximately 2″ wide x 7/8″ deep x 2 1/4″ tall. My 2nd gen fit in there with a little bit of ease but if you were making for a gen 3 or 4 you might need to make the pattern a tiny bit wider. –Anne
If you do add a little width to the pattern, be sure to add to the middle rather than the sides so you don’t affect the depth. –Anne
