Turn any bag or hoodie into a cute Valentine’s Day accessory with these fun iron-on patches. I’ve got a tutorial showing how you can make them, including a pattern with three cute Valentine’s designs!
I’ve always thought iron-on patches are super fun. I guess I’ve never gotten over the thrill of earning a patch in Girl Scouts. There’s something about an iron-on patch that means something. Either an achievement or a special occasion, or just something about your personality you want to share.
These Valentine Iron-on Patches are a cute way to add Valentine cheer to a sweatshirt, bag, or any fabric item.
These patches iron on just like any patch you would buy from the store. Just position it where you want it and iron it down. Though, just like a store-bought patch, if you’re ironing it down to anything that’s going to get a lot of wear I’d suggest also going around the outside of the patch with a line of sewing (either hand stitching or by machine).
The free pattern includes three Valentine designs. There’s a LOVE patch,
a Heart Circle patch,
and a Layered Hearts patch.
They all sew up quickly, though the smallest one with just a single heart in a circle, is probably the fastest to make. These would make the cutest class Valentines!
This is a great scrapbusting project! You probably have everything you need on hand. None of the pieces of fabric or fusible webbing are very large. You probably have eveyrhign you need on hand to make these. Perfect for using up those scraps!
Finished dimensions for the patches are:
LOVE Patch – 4 1/8” wide x 2 ¼” tall
Circle Heart Patch – 2” diameter
Layered Hearts Patch – 3” wide x 2 ¾” tall
Supplies
Quilting cotton – scraps
Fusible webbing –scraps
Duck cloth or heavy canvas – scraps

Make the DIY Valentine Iron-On Patches
Trace the badge pattern pieces to the paper side of the fusible webbing.
Most of the shapes are symmetrical and do not need to be reversed. The letters in the LOVE patch are the only ones that are not symmetrical and they are already reversed for you in the pattern.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the webbing to the backs of your fabric scraps.
Then, follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the patch background shapes to a scrap of duck fabric. You don’t need a large piece of duck cloth – just a scrap slightly larger than the patch background shape.
Once you have the background fused down, go ahead and fuse down all of the other shapes in the pattern down on to the background shape.
Top stitch around the shapes close to the edge. You don’t need to top stitch around the background shape.
Cut the patches out from the duck cloth.
Sew with a satin stitch all around the outside edges of the patch.
I used a stitch wide of 4 and a length of 1/2. I find I get a smoother satin stitch if I go around the patch twice with a slightly longer stitch, rather than one time around with a super short stitch.
Finally, cut a piece of fusible webbing the same size as the patch. Fuse it to the back of the patch. Remove the paper backing. Your Valentine iron-on patch is finished!
