It’s summer, and around here summer is all about having fun and being lazy! One of our family’s very favorite lazy recipes is German Pancakes. Ever since my husband and I were newlyweds this has been a go-to recipe for lazy mornings at home or nights when we have nothing to cook and hardly any groceries in the house. Our kids LOVE this meal. The other day we pulled into a McDonald’s drive through (claaaaaaassy) and my son cried out, “Order me German Pancakes!” Ummm….RANDOM!
One of my favorite things about this meal is how easy and fun it is for kiddos to help cook.
Here we go – easy peasy – throw everything EXCEPT the butter into it a bowl and beat it together with a whisk!
Melt the butter and pour it into the bottom of a 9×13 casserole dish. Pour the batter over the melted butter and pop it into the oven.
Now give it some time and see it rise into puffy fabulousness! The kids love that part!
Ta-da! Top with powdered sugar and ENJOY! Full recipe below.
- 6 Eggland's Best Eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup (1 stick) butter
- powdered sugar to taste
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Pour milk, flour, and eggs into a bowl and whisk together. Melt the butter and pour it into the bottom of a 9" x 13" pan or baking dish. Pour the batter over the top of the melted butter. Bake at 425 degrees for about 25 minutes. Mixture will get very large. Top with powdered sugar and enjoy!

To save a step, I put half of a stick of butter in the 9×13 pan and put it in the oven to melt while the oven preheats. As I mentioned, I cut the butter amount in half and it’s still delicious!

Yum! I’ve made these in my skillet before, but never a baking dish. I’m going to try this exact recipe this week.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a German pancake, but it looks like something that would be fun to make with my little guy. It’s coming to our table soon!

I’m so in love with this! My mother is first generation American from Germany… Her parents were granted asylum on one of the last ships from Germany during WWII because their families were hiding locals who were being hunted by the SS… And anything that gives me a flavor of what she experienced growing up, like these sort of recipes, just make me so happy. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks! We did a reno a couple of years ago. It’s actually my dad’s oven. We are just squatters! 😉 (Invited squatters, of course.)

Can the batter be prepared the night before?
