A DIY Halloween costume doesn’t have to be hard to make. And it doesn’t need to involve expensive materials or hours in front of the sewing machine. You can make this easy felt witch hat in 15 minutes and it’ll look better than most costume store witch hats.
I’ve got a tutorial for you below – AND a free pattern you can use to make the witch hat in an adult or child size.
All you need to make it is the free pattern and 5/8 yard of felt (1/2 yard if you’re making the child size hat.)
These hats are so fast and so easy to make! It takes just 2 seams and about 15 minutes to make one.
The simple witch hat is cute enough on its own, but it’s also the perfect blank canvas for embellishment. Just walk through the fancy trims aisle and the Halloween wreath picks at the craft store and you’ll find all the inspiration you need to make a witch hat that will stand out from the rest.
For this hat, I used some pleated trim for the hat band and then stuck in a glittery wreath pick for an embellishment.
Or, for this kid sized witch hat, I used some hot pink tulle and lace for a hat band and then finished it off with a glittery spider.
But of course these are just two easy options. The options for embellishment are endless! Though if you’re a purist, the hat is also cute just left plain.
If you think about it, a witch hat is basically just a cone shape sewn on a donut shape. But it takes a bit of geometry to get the pieces to match up right. With my free pattern, you can skip the diameter and circumference formulas and get right to the sewing.
The free pattern comes in two sizes – adult and child. The adult size hat is made to fit a 23” head, while the child size is made to fit a 21” head.
The one super important thing about this project is to use the right kind of felt. I used the premium felt from JOANN. It’s a little more expensive than the craft felt, and comes in far fewer colors, but it’s got the body that you need to get a good witch hat shape. The craft felt will make a floppy droopy hat so spring for the good stuff.
Supplies
Premium felt – 1/2 yard for child size, 5/8 yard for adult size
Free Pattern – Easy Felt Witch Hat
Seam allowances ½” unless otherwise noted. RST = Right Sides Together.
Fold the Cone in half lengthwise. Sew the long edge to create a cone.
Trim seam allowance, especially at the top point. I trim pretty close at the point, like 1/8” or so, and then taper to the full 1/2” seam allowance at the bottom.
Turn the Cone right side out.
Cut notches to mark the half and quarter points around the bottom of the Cone.
Next, cut notches to mark the half and quarter points around the inside circle of the Brim.
Place the Brim around the bottom of the Cone, RST and matching notches. Sew around the circle to attach the Brim to the Cone.
Your witch hat is finished! It really is THAT easy!

Hi!! I’m so excited to make this. As “Not a sewer person” the “east peasy” part has me hook. But, I printed the instructions (thank you so much!!!) and I seem to be missing part 1… I printed it three times figuring it was me – it usually is. What am I missing (besides part 1 and a dash of sanity)? Help, pretty please!!
I have reached out to my contributor who wrote this post. Hopefully she will get back to you. In the meantime, I printed out the pattern to see what you meant. I know it’s confusing, but when I laid out pages 2-10 all of the parts seemed to be there. I think 1 isn’t necessary . . . ? Sorry I’m not more help.
I just printed it as well. page 1 is not needed for pattern pieces, its kinda just a “cover sheet”. Hope you got it figured out 🙂
I am at a beginners level with sewing and reading patterns! When I trace the pattern, am I adding an extra 1/2 ” for the seam allowance, or am I going to trace the pattern as is then use that as is to make the seam allowance?

I’m sorry, but I’m very bad at guessing sizing. Do adult hats usually fit her? I guess you can print out the pattern and kindof put it on her head before you buy the fabric…? Sorry I’m not more helpful. 🙂
Hi, I am trying to make the witch hat using the free pattern you have provided. I have a few questions since the instructions felt a little unclear – #do I cut two circles for the brim and sew them together right sides facing and then turn them right side out? #folding the cone was also slightly confusing. If you could leave a reply here, I would totally appreciate it.

You only need to cut 1 circle for brim. The hat is made from felt which won’t fray so there’s no need to finish the edges. If your felt is lightweight you COULD cut 2 circles and sew them together around the outside edge, though I would probably choose not to turn them and just trim close to the stitch line. That should give a neat finish without the bulk. Hope that helps! –Anne
Ive a question about this pattern! How do you get it from going straight up, like a regular cone, to have the point bent to the side. Is it cause felt is structures and will Hold the shape? Or did you have to add extra stitches to tack it down to stay?
The felt should have enough structure to hold the bend. I didn’t have to use glue or extra stitches to get it to stay, but if your felt isn’t wanting to hold the bend on its own a couple of stitches would probably do the trick. –Anne
I’m a little confused on the pattern? It looks cut off on the pdf to print on each section.
Am i missing something on how to download it properly?
It looks like it’s an issue with Chrome. The whole pattern page is there, it’s just not centered. I was not able to find a way to make my Chrome browser print it centered but it did print correctly for me in both Adobe Reader and Edge. –Anne
