I am super excited to tell you about an opportunity that I have coming up. A couple of weeks ago I was discussing with my five year old that we should try to turn the abandoned flower garden in our backyard into a small vegetable or herb garden. The main garden still gets flowers every year, but the small garden under the tree in the backyard corner has been sorely neglected. He was super pumped about this idea, and then an email popped up the very next morning inviting me to try Gro-ables. SCORE!! The timing could not be more perfect!
Gro-ables is a new product line from Miracle Gro that is designed to make herb and vegetable gardening easy for people who are new to gardening, like my boy and me. They are seed pods that are guaranteed to work as long as you follow the directions. I love that they tell me exactly what to do so I’m not left guessing, and consequently killing all of my seeds and plants. Not that I’ve ever had that happen before or anything…… (Psst….I totally have.) Plus, they are CHEAP—we are talking $1.50 or less per pod! Again, score.
We decided that we are going to start by growing basil and dill herbs, as well as butter lettuce. My boy is especially excited about the lettuce, although I’m a bit nervous about all of the wild rabbits in our neighborhood. We will have to guard our lettuce diligently. Or get some chicken wire.
You may be wondering why you would bother to grow your own food, especially herbs. What do you do with them?? Ummm….SOO much! There was a time in the past when I was clueless about fresh herbs. My mom always used dried herbs, so I didn’t believe there was enough of a difference to justify the cost of fresh herbs. My husband the foodie has me convinced. I can’t wait to make caprese salads and baked panzanella with our very own basil, and I can’t wait to use the freshly grown dill to make our favorite butter dill sauce that we use on fish and chicken for light meals during the spring and summer. Mmmmm…..
What do you think? Will you be giving gardening a try with Gro-ables this spring and summer? Stay tuned for the results of my gardening adventure, and maybe I will share my recipes as well!

What a great idea! I love my garden. I’ve wanted my own herb garden for 2 years now but life happens ya know?!?! 🙂 What type of tree do you have that the flowers don’t grow anymore? We have black walnuts and NOTHING grows around them. So I did some checking and the walnut tree is act like a poison to other plants. Im going to have to try those pods with my daughter! Thanks for sharing!

I don’t know what kind of tree it is, to tell you the truth. It’s not necessarily the tree…..it’s just a garden that has been ignored and neglected for a decade…..whoops! 🙂
