Monsters Inc Slippers

I am SOOO EXCITED to kick off DISNEY WEEK!!!  First up: my fab contributor Angels is here to share with you a tutorial for these ADORABLE Monsters Inc. slippers.  This girl is seriously WAAAAY too talented, am I right?!  I mean, who sews super cute SLIPPERS?!  Angela does, that’s who!  So let’s see how she did it!  And stay tuned, because this afternoon’s Disney Week tutorial is also going to knock your socks off!  Don’t worry, your new monster slippers will be nearby….

Currently my sons second favorite movie, after the LEGO movie of course, is Monsters University. He loves it, and he loves Mike Wazowski. So I understand where the Mike Wazowski part of this project came from, but I don’t understand where he came up with the slipper part of this project. One day he just started asking me to make him Mike Wazowski slippers. I thought it was an interesting request and didn’t take it too seriously at first. Especially since my son refuses to wear any article of clothing that I ever make him. But after multiple mornings of me asking my son, “What would you like to do today?” and my son responding “I wan’t you to make me Mike Wazowski slippers.” I knew he was pretty serious about this project, and that it might be something I make that he would actually want to use. And I was right! He is in love with his slippers. And his sister was so in love with them as well that I had to make her, her own coordinating pair just to stop them from fighting over the slippers. These have been a big hit at our house! If you have any Monsters Inc. fans at your house I suggest making a pair or two of these.

Here is how it is done: (And the great thing about this is that, once you create your basic pattern, you can customize these any way you would like. They don’t have to just be Monsters Inc. slippers.)
Supply List
Mike:
1/4 yard fleece
1/4 yard minky fabric
1/4 yard interfacing
Green, white, tan and black felt
Puffy paint
Sully:
1/4 yard fur
1/4 yard fleece
1/4 yard interfacing
Purple felt
Puffy paint

First, Trace your child’s shoe.

Then trace around your child’s shoe again, but only the front half this time.
Now you have a pattern piece for the bottom and the top of your slipper.
Now let’s make the pattern for the sides of your slipper. First, Measure the circumference of the shoe pattern. This is going to be the length you will cut for the sides of your slipper.
To make a pattern for the sides of your slipper, First take the circumference of your shoe pattern and divide that in half. For example, I got 20 inches for the circumference of my shoe pattern and half of that is 10.
On a piece of paper I drew a line 10 inches long.
Then decide how tall you want the sides of your slippers to be. I like the back to be taller than the front, or the heal to be taller than the toe. For my sons size 11 foot, I did 2 1/2 inches in the back and 1 1/2 inches in the front. For my daughters size 5 foot I did 1 1/2 inches in the back and 1 inch in the front.
For example: At one end of my 11 inch line I measured up 2 1/2 inches and at the other end I measured up 1 1/2 inches. Then I connected those points. So you should have a pattern that looks like the following.
When you go to cut your pattern make sure put the smaller end on the fold. You may want to mark that on your pattern now to make sure you remember.
Now cut out all of your pieces of fabric. You will cut out two of everything for since you will be making two slippers. I used fleece on the outside and a minky fabric on the inside. Make sure you cut two pieces for both your inside fabric and outside fabric. And make sure you cut your interfacing as well.
Iron on your interfacing to your fleece. This will give it a little more structure since it is such a soft fabric that you are using.
Next sew together, with right sides facing, your fleece and your minky fabric for the sides of your shoe. You only need to sew one edge together. You can leave the other seam open. Next fold your fabric in half so that the interfacing is in the middle.
Next sew your sides to the bottom of your slipper. I start sewing in the middle back of the slipper. Then I manipulate the side fabric around the bottom of my slipper so that I am only sewing around the edge of the bottom and sides of the slipper.
When you are done sewing, flip your slipper inside out and it should look like this.
Next cut out the face. I cut out three circles for the eyes and two half circles for the mouth. Then I cut zig-zags for the teeth. I sewed on the eyes and mouth using a zig-zag stitch.

You also want to cut out two triangle per slipper for the ears. You want to place them down in the middle of your fleece and minky fabric. You will sew a line across the top. Then you flip flip it inside out to get your finished top of your slipper.

Next turn your slipper inside out, and your face upside down and pin together.
Then sew the top and bottom of your slipper together.
Once you have sewn both of your slippers, they should look like the following. But, you are not quite done…
These are going to be slippery slippers, so I added a little traction to the bottom using puffy paint. You can draw your own pattern. I chose to paint on dots and write my son a little note.
My son loves his slippers!!! He wears them all of the time. They have to be placed right next to his bed at night so that they are there for him in the morning.

Soon, my kids started fighting over these slippers. I decided that my daughter needed her own coordinating pair. Luckily, Jo Anns happens to sell blue fur. I made them the exact same way that I did the Mike slippers. The only thing I did differently was that I glue on the felt pieces instead of sewing them on.

Now I have Sully and Mike Wazowski feet at my house!

Those are adorable! I showed them to my 2 year old and he started dragging me all over the house asking for Sully slippers – apparently he thought I had them just hidden away somewhere! Quick question – if I wanted to make the Sully version, do I need 1/4 yd minky and 1/4 yd fur? The instructions say minky or fur, but then later it says you used the fleece on the outside, so I’m assuming that for the blue slippers you would use fur in place of the fleece? I can’t wait to make these, I hope they turn out half as cute as yours!

I LOVE IT!!! Sorry for the confusion. For Sully, I used fur on the outside and fleece on the inside. For Mike, I used fleece on the outside and minky on the inside. I updated the supply list on the post.

I was so excited to find this web site, and even happier when I found these slippers. Only problem is-I am the Grandma, not the mom, so I don’t have a pair of his shoes around! Really wish they didn’t require us to have shoes to do the slippers.

Making these for my great-grandson. Have them all cut out, but don’t see a seam allowance listed. Looking at the machine, it may be 1/4″? Also it looks as if you used a regular sewing machine all through. Anyone make them on a serger?

I’m so sorry, but I can’t seem to get an answer from the contributor who created this tutorial years ago. I hope you figured it out! Sarah
