Mini Mitten Christmas Ornament Tutorial

I’m having a ball this year sewing up this stuffed mini mitten Christmas ornament tutorial!  So far I’ve made a set to hang on my tree, as well as a set to give away.  Or perhaps I’ll use them as special tie-on embellishments when wrapping gifts.

I think it’s fun to add on little ornaments when wrapping gifts.  It’s like a little bonus gift for the recipient!

I’ve got a mini mitten Christmas ornament tutorial and free pattern for you below.

They’re super fast to make, and they u se just small pieces of fabric so you can do some scrapbusting while sewing up cute holiday decorations.

And if you have small children in your house (or, like me, a small army of bad cats) you’ll appreciate the non-breakable aspect of these soft fabric ornaments.  I’m always looking for some non-breakable ornaments to add to my Christmas tree!

I started making the little mittens from scraps of an outdoor fabric left over from a Christmas stocking I had just made for my front door.  The woven design and the faux fur paired so nicely together, and the colors were perfect for my tree!

But then as I was looking around my sewing room I realized that the pattern is sized perfectly to use with charm squares.  How perfect is that!  I used up some charm squares left over from this bunting banner to sew up a set of 6 coordinating mitten ornaments.

I can’t tell which version I like better – the more traditional red/white design or the bright happy prints from the charm squares!

You might notice from the photos that the hanging loops are super short.  That’s because I’m kind of a lazy Christmas tree decorator and prefer to use the metal wire hangers with my ornaments to having to wrestle the end of a tree branch through a long ribbon loop.  If you want a longer loop, that’s an easy enough adjustment to make by just using a longer length of ribbon.

Supplies (to make one mitten):

Mitten – 2 charm squares, or scraps of cotton, home dec weight fabric,  wool, felt, recycled sweaters, etc.

Cuff – low-pile faux fur or fleece, 5” x 2.5” for each mitten

Ribbon –  narrow ribbon, 2.5” long

Polyfil stuffing

Free pattern

RST = Right Sides Together.  All seam allowances ¼” unless otherwise noted.

Sew a Mini Mitten Ornament:

Place your Mitten pieces RST. Sew around sides and bottom.

Clip curves.  To avoid puckering at the thumb, cut a notch into the V-shaped corner. Cut close, but not all the way, to the stitch line.

Turn right side out.  Press.

Lightly stuff your Mitten with the Polyfil stuffing.

Fold the Cuff piece in half RST the short way, so it measures 2.5” x 2.5”.  Sew down the open edge to make a tube.  Don’t turn it right side out.

Fold the ribbon in half.

Then, place it inside the Cuff, butted up right next to that side seam and with raw edges lined up with bottom raw edge of the Cuff.  Baste in place 1/8” from the edge.  (Sew through all layers.)

Now, place the Cuff inside the stocking, WRONG sides together and with the side seam of the Cuff matching the non-thumb side seam of the Mitten.  The ribbon you basted in to the Cuff will be inside the Mitten.   Place the Cuff far enough inside the Mitten that there is about ½” overlap.  Sew across the top of the Mitten ¼” from the edge. This will secure the Cuff and close the top of the Mitten.

Flip the Cuff down over the raw edges of the Mitten.

Your Mini Mitten Christmas Ornament is done!
