Candy Corn Ghost Softie – Free Sewing Pattern

This fleece ghost makes a sweet softie for a kid – or an adorable decoration for a front porch! My Candy Corn Ghost Softie is easy to sew from fleece fabric.

Not all ghosts are scary! This sweet fleece ghost is actually quite cute. And soft, and squishy. He’s got a friendly little smile on his face, and he’s holding a big candy corn treat! You can sew one up in an afternoon using my free pattern below.

When I made the pattern for this fleece ghost, I wasn’t sure if he would be a softie or a pillow. Honestly, he could be either. He’s big enough to use as a festive Halloween throw pillow. But he’s also soft and huggable enough to be a softie.

If sewing face details on a softie stresses you out, like it does me – you’ll be happy to know that the eyes and mouth are made with Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV). I’ve got a cut file in both .SVG and .STUDIO3 format you can download. Just cut the file on your cutting machine and iron it down to the fleece. Easy, peasy.

This free pattern is kind of like two patterns in one. There’s the fleece ghost, but there’s also that little mini candy corn softie that he’s holding.

You could make just the candy corn if you wanted. A couple of fleece candy corns would be pretty accents for a wreath. Or how cute would a bowl of fleece candy corns be?

Finished dimensions are approximately 14” tall x “ wide (not counting his swoop).

Supplies

White Fleece – ½ yard

Orange Fleece – ¼ yard or scraps at least 11” wide

Yellow Fleece – ¼ yard or scraps at least 11” wide

Fusible fleece- large scraps

Black HTV – large scrap at least 5” x 6”

Polyfil Stuffing – 1 bag

Free cut file – .SVG format or .Studio format

All seam allowances are ½”, unless otherwise stated. RST = Right Sides Together

Prep

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the fusible fleece to the back of the Arm pieces.

Use a cutting machine (e.g., Cricut or Silhouette) to cut the face design from the black HTV vinyl.

Cut all pattern pieces except the Candy Corn piece from white fleece. See the next section for cutting and sewing instructions for the Candy Corn.

Sew the Candy Corn Mini Softie

Before you can cut out the Candy Corn piece, you’ll need to sew some strips of fleece together to make that classic candy corn stripe.

Cut the following pieces from fleece:

White fleece – 1 piece, 2 ¾” tall x 11” wide
Orange fleece – 1 piece, 1 ¾” tall x 11” wide
Yellow fleece – 1 piece 2 ¾” tall x 11” wide

Sew the Orange and Yellow strips RST using a 1/4” seam allowance.

Sew the White strip to the top of the Orange strip, RST and using a ¼” seam allowance.

Finger press the seam allowances open.

Now use the Candy Corn pattern piece to cut two Candy Corn pieces from your striped fleece fabric. Align the dashed lines on the pattern with the stripes on your pieced fleece fabric.

Place the 2 Candy Corn pieces RST. Sew all around using a ½” seam allowance, leaving roughly 1 1/2” open for a turning hole. The sides of Candy Corn will be sewn to the back of the Arms in the finished piece, so I chose to put my turning hole on one of the sides.

Clip curves and trim seam allowances. If you have pinking shears, you can use them to trim the seam allowances and notch your curves all in one step.

Stuff the Candy Corn, then use a ladder stitch to hand sew the turning hole closed.

Sew the Arms

Place two Arm pieces RST. Sew around curved edges with a ½” seam allowance, leaving the straight ends open.

Repeat with the remaining two Arm pieces.

Clip curves, turn the Arms right side out.

Sew the Ghost Front

Follow manufacturer’s instructions to add the face you cut from black HTV to the Ghost Front, where indicated on the pattern. The face is centered across the Ghost’s face, with the top of the eyes roughly 3 3/8” from the top of the Ghost Front, and the sides of the eyes roughly 3 ½” from the sides of the Ghost Front.

Place the Arms along the sides of the Ghost Front, between the circles marked on the pattern, RST and with raw edges aligned. Baste in place with ¼” seam allowance.
