Hello, my fellow Halloween lovers!!! As I mentioned last week, one of my favorite things about our trip to Disneyland last year was seeing the classic ride The Haunted Mansion all Nightmare-Before-Christmas-ed up. WAY too fun!!! (You can see a few pictures of it on my Jack Skellington Caramel Apple Post.) I heart Jack Skellington. He just reminds me of one of my very, very, very best friends (if you are reading this then you KNOW who you are)! 😉 Last year I felt that the movie was a bit scary for my boy, but this year he watched it with me. He loved it, but requested that we fast forward through Oogey Boogey’s scenes. And who can blame him?! CREEPER! Anyway….I have been loving creating Jack Skellington-inspired items this year, so when I spotted this skeleton face on the new Monster Bash Cartridge from Cricut I knew exactly what I was going to make with it: a Jack Skellington Shirt!
I know, I know, he doesn’t EXACTLY look like my man Jack. Jack’s nostrils are different, but it is SUPER close, and my kiddos are thrilled with them. That’s right, I said kiddos PLURAL. My lady wouldn’t cooperate for posing, but she got a skeleton shirt as well! Cuties.
Now let’s get going. I used iron-on vinyl on these shirts, but you could also use fabric, as shown on my Quick & Spooky Die Cut T-Shirts tutorial from last year. Here are the supplies that I used while making these shirts. Once you have your supplies together it will take you less than ten minutes. Seriously!
* Cricut Die-Cutting Machine and Monster Bash Cartridge
* White Iron-On Vinyl
* Black T-shirt (I always get my basic kid tees at Walmart. Only 3 or 4 bucks!)
* Iron & Ironing Board
For this project I used Cricut Craft-Room. Have you heard of it? Have you used it? I hadn’t tried it until fairly recently, and it totally changed my Cricut-using life!! You can layer images together and then print them as a single image. For example, I chose a basic circle from my Cricut library and made it the appropriate size for my son’s shirt. Next I pulled the skeleton face from the Monster Bash cartridge and pulled it into the circle. I adjusted it to the appropriate size and hit “weld” to seal them together. That’s it! Now it’s a skeleton face inside of a circle and will cut as such. When it was time to do my little lady’s shirt I just adjusted the size of the image and printed it again. Easy-peasy! If that doesn’t make sense to you there are loads of YouTube videos around about Cricut Craft Room, as well as detailed instructions on the Cricut website.
So….create your image. Measure your shirt and decide how large you want the image. Create the image on Cricut Craft Room and adjust it accordingly. Now click “cut.” Make sure the settings are set to vinyl and your machine/mat size. Cut out a piece of iron-on vinyl and PLACE THE SHINY SIDE FACING DOWNWARD ON THE MAT. (I made the mistake of doing this wrong. Don’t do it!)
Now cut!
“Weed” the excess vinyl pieces off of the plastic so that you are ready to iron.
Place the image in the center of the shirt with the shiny plastic side UP!
Turn the iron to a medium heat (no steam) and quickly iron the vinyl onto the shirt. Don’t get too hot or iron too long or it will start to melt and get messy. Not that I know from experience or anything….. 😉
ALLOW THE PLASTIC AND VINYL TO COOL FOR A FEW MINUTES! Gently peel back the plastic, leaving the vinyl on the shirt.
Ta-Da! Done! Crazy simple, and the vinyl washes up beautifully! (I used the Cricut brand that I bought with a coupon at JoAnn Fabrics, but I’m sure others would work as well.)
What do you think? Do you love it? If you do then you need to check out this deal! If you buy a Monster Bash cartridge from the Cricut website right now you can receive another Halloween cartridge, Chic & Spooky, for FREE!! Score!! HERE IS THE LINK TO THE DEAL! YAY!
Now, you MUST see my The Nightmare Before Christmas Inspired Glow-in-the-Dark Shoes that I have posted today as a contributor post for 5 Minutes for Mom! I include a set of drawings for 6 different character templates that you could use. I love seeing my boy wearing his Jack Skellington shirt with these shoes! I have problems…. 😉
And, of course, last week I made some Disneyland-Inspired Jack Skellington Caramel Apples! Fun!

Hi Sarah-
Where do I purchase the iron-on vinyl?? Can I get it locally or do I have to order it online?
These turned out adorable!
Great Idea!
Thank-
Carrie

Hi Carrie! I got it at JoAnn fabrics with a coupon. (Cricut brand) I got your email, but it’s a lengthy response and I’m typing with one hand and holding a baby with the other, so I will get back to you later. 🙂
