DIY Dumbo Mickey Ears

My family recently visited Disneyland, my happy place! Yes, I’m addicted to all things Disney and I am not afraid to admit it. In fact, it has always been my dream to work for Disney in some capacity. Years ago I was watching the extras on the Finding Nemo DVD. One of the artists that worked on the movie said that she initially got into her career after a trip to Disneyland. She said she was riding on It’s a Small World and saw the purple paper mache hippo. She said she knew right then and there that she wanted to make paper mache hippos for a living. Now she was obviously speaking more figuratively than literally and who knows what her journey from It’s a Small world to being a Disney movie artist was. I still just love that story. Every time I ride It’s a Small World I think of that story and dream of all the things that I’m inspired by at Disney. This past trip I realized that my dream Disney job would be to make Disney costumes, sew princess dresses, or design Disney apparel and accessories.

Since I don’t have my dream job yet, I am content to make my daughter Disney themed apparel. For our latest trip I made my daughter a dress for her favorite ride in the park… Dumbo! When we were in Disneyland last August my daughter was obsessed with Dumbo. She wanted to ride it again and again!! Then last December I found this adorable Dumbo fabric at Jo-Ann Fabrics. I was hoping that I would have the opportunity to make her a Dumbo dress for her to wear at the park before she outgrew here Dumbo loving phase. Somehow the stars magically aligned and we found ourselves at Disney again. She got to wear her dress on her favorite ride!

My girl also needed to have a pair of Dumbo mickey ears to go with her dress. They were so fun to make. Plus, I learned while I was at the park that they have discontinued their mickey dumbo ears. Since you can no longer buy them, I guess you will just have to make your own. I thought I’d share with you how it was done.

You will need:

A headband

Felt- blue, pink, and yellow

Red ribbon

Gold ric rac

White feather

Hot glue gun

Get the DUMBO MICKEY EAR PATTERN here!

I made the ears to match the dress. I used blue felt for the ears and a white feather. If you wanted to be more authentic then I would use gray felt and a black feather instead.

First, cut two 1/2 inch wide strips of felt.

Next you will wrap the felt around the headband, gluing as you go.

Since you covered the combs of the headband, it will easier for the headband to slip off of your head. I would add a few dots of glue to the bottom of the headband to keep it from sliding off easily.

Now fold the ears in half around the headband. Use your hot glue to glue around the ears so that they will stick together and to the headband.

Next glue on your pink Dumbo ears. Note* These pink ears are different then in my final version. I started with these, but then decided that I wanted the Dumbo ears to look more like ears. So I changed them out, but not until I had already finished the ears.

Next, glue on the hat.

Now, make your bow. For the tutorial on how to make the bow, check out my post on the Disney bows I made for my last Disney trip. The only thing I added was the gold ric rac which I just wrapped around the middle of the bow. Once the bow is made, glue it to the headband.

Then the last thing you need to glue on is the feather next to the hat. Look hard I promise it is there 😉

The dress and the ears went together perfectly!!

Now you are ready to take flight!

Enjoy your Dumbo ears and your Disney vacation! My daughter clearly did!
