Last month I was super excited to share a fun kid craft idea for Design Dazzle’s amazing Summer Camp series. Last year my son and I teamed up and shared Sponge Painted T-Shirts. This year we shared another fun, super simple, paint related kid craft: sea creatures! Let’s take a look at the fun day that we had making them!
For this project you will need paper plates, quart sized ziploc bags, some dark construction paper, a white colored pencil, scissors, a stapler, and washable paint.
Each kid painted 2 1/2 paper plates. The full plates became a fish and an octopus, and the half plate became a jellyfish. My boy did a careful job, including eyes and everything. My girl insisted on a blob of each color of paint . . . and then mixed them all together into a brownish-black mess. But isn’t she PRECIOUS?!
After the paint dried it was time to finish off our creatures. Sadly, it started to rain while the paint was drying, so I had to use my flash on these later pictures. Sorry for the decreased prettiness in photo quality.
Let’s talk fish first. This one is crazy simple. Cut a triangle from the plate. That triangle is now the fish’s mouth, and you staple it to the back and it becomes a tail!
Now let’s make an octopus! Cut a piece of construction paper into eight strips. Do an accordion fold on each strip and staple them onto the paper plate. My little lady’s creature ended up looking very much like a spider, so we tried to bunch the tentacles a bit more at the bottom for my son’s. I also had him draw circles on the tentacle paper strips with a white colored pencil to attempt to make the strips look more like tentacles. He informed me that they weren’t authentic looking and that a real octopus would have ink jet shooters. Errr . . . . . . sorry? Love that kid and his animal obsession. Thank you, Wild Kratts! Last, but not least, we have our jellyfish. The jellyfish is my fav. Cut a quart sized ziploc bag in strips, but not all the way through. Staple the ziploc bag to the bottom of your half paper plate. Cute, right?!
