Last year I made these Spooky, Sparkly Spiders for a post for Sweet C’s Designs. This year I am thrilled to be reposting them, with Courtney’s blessing of course, and sharing them as my first Halloween post of the year! HIP HIP HOORAY FOR HALLOWEEN!!!! I am obsessed, you guys. OBSESSED. Like, it dwarfs my s’mores obsession. For real. I have problems. So prepare yourself! Eek!
Alrighty. Spooky, sparkly spiders! A perfect pairing of two of my favorite things: Halloween decorations and GLITTER. Yum. These are super fab for hanging from light fixtures, especially chandeliers. A fun friend of mine suggested that we do this several years ago for the spooky-looking chandelier in my apartment, but we were too busy chasing our wild baby boys to get it done. So last year I finally got around to giving it a try! The lighting fixtures in my father’s house (where we are living to save money while my husband finishes his medical training) are not very *spooky* per se, but they worked nonetheless.
I hung a whole bunch of spiders from the light fixture that hangs above our kitchen table, and I also hung a single spider here and there around the main floor. I think I like the single spiders even better because it can truly catch you off guard for a moment to see a single spider dangling from underneath your lampshade. (Arachnophobia, anyone?? My sister-in-law would freak out if she came over to our house and saw one of these glittering bad boys!)
Are you ready to glitter some spiders? Let’s get going! The glittering part is very simple and quick. It is the hanging of the spiders one by one on fishing line that can get a bit tedious. Maybe you can do what I did and rewatch The Avengers for the third time with your obsessed husband as you hang them up.
1. Gather up your supplies. You will need plastic spider rings, spray adhesive, extra fine glitter, scissors, fishing line, and a paper plate for each color of glitter that you use. Prep the spiders by cutting the ring backs off of them. Lay them on the paper plates.
2. Spray the spiders liberally with your spray adhesive. I tried spraying all of my plates at once, but the glue dried quickly and I ended up having to give them each a second coat of glue and glitter. In order to avoid this problem just work with one plate of spiders at a time and be generous with the glue.
3. Pour glitter over your spiders. Once again, don’t skimp! Dump it generously over the freshly sprayed spiders and let them sit. If you try to be economical with your glitter you will end up having to glitter them a second time. Trust me. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. 😉
4. Give your spiders some time to dry. Then gently remove them from your plate and set aside for a moment. (Handle them as little as possible to minimize glitter loss.) Fold your paper plate gently in half and tap/funnel the excess glitter back into your glitter containers. Most of it will come off of the plate.
5. Now place your spiders glittery side down on the plates once again and repeat the process so that both sides of your spiders will be sparkly.
6. Once your spiders are thoroughly glittered you can hang them from your light fixtures using fishing line or clear thread. They are super cute, especially when sunlight streams through the window and they sparkle like mad.
Have a spooky, sparkly Halloween, everyone!
