I intended to create my kiddos some festive Thanksgiving shirts at the beginning of November, but I just got around to it this week. Oh well, better late than never, right?? At least they will look super cute at Thanksgiving Dinner and in the pictures! And, let’s be honest, that’s what matters! It’s all about the pictures, at least in this house!
Last year I saw a onesie like this on Pinterest, but I haven’t really been able to track down a good tutorial on how to make it, although I did find some cute tops similar to this on Etsy that were appliqued. I didn’t want to sew or applique, so I figured out how to do this top the quick and dirty way. How? Fabric Mod Podge, of course! That stuff rocks.
I dyed the onesie red with Rit dye (color: Scarlett), but you could obviously use a white onesie to save on time and hassle. If you are interested in dyeing a onesie or shirt for your little lady then you can check out the tutorial that I used, which I found at MADE.
I used the exact same fabric and rick rack for both this project and the Rick Rack Turkey Shirt that I made for my son. Economical and they will coordinate perfectly for pictures! Score.
Here are the supplies that you will need:
* Onesie or top in the color of your choice
* Fabric Mod Podge (and a small paintbrush)
* Thanksgiving/Fall fabric (I found mine at Joann Fabric and Craft Stores. Turkeys in top hats….cutest!)
* Rick Rack in the color of your choice (I used yellow here and also used red and orange rick rack for the boy shirt.)
(* Spools of thread for tracing the circles)
Start by cutting several circles out for your “necklace.” I used two different sizes of spools to trace my circles and then I cut them out by hand.
Plan your onesie by laying out your rick rack and circles. I originally planned to do a single strand, but I decided I liked it better with two because it looked fuller. I’m a flashy gal, just in case you hadn’t noticed.
Now cut your rick rack to the appropriate length and carefully but generously paint Fabric Mod Podge onto it and gently press it down onto your onesie. Paint only small to medium sections at a time or it will get crazy messy and difficult to deal with.
Now generously paint the back of your circles. DO NOT SKIMP AROUND THE EDGES! If you do they will peel up once they are dry. Gently place and press down each circle.
Let dry overnight. Do not wash for 72 hours. (I generally skip the top coat of Mod Podge that the bottle recommends. It makes the fabric a bit to “plasticy” for my taste.)
Now go put it on your darling little model and do a photo shoot! Hopefully your model won’t be as traumatized by this experience as mine apparently was. Drama much? I’m in BIG trouble once this little lady hits the teenage years!
If you would like to make your little lady a fabulous turkey headband like the one my little munchkin is wearing then check out the tutorial that I shared yesterday from The Ribbon Retreat.
And don’t forget to check out my tutorial today for a Rick Rack Turkey Shirt!
I mean, come on, could he possibly look any sweeter in that turkey shirt?!
