Today’s post is something totally different than my norm: it’s the 100 Book Challenge! I spent my years prior to motherhood as an elementary school teacher, and every once in a while I dust off my skill set to use with my babies. I did this with my little boy years ago while he was in preschool, but then I forgot about it until I came across these photos a few days ago. It made me excited about this idea and eager to share it with my readers.
Here’s the challenge: READ 100 BOOKS! As an end goal I told him that when we finished we would go on a “Mommy Date” to a bookstore and he could pick out any book and I would buy it for him. You can use that idea or choose your own end goal/prize.
In order to sneak some math skills into the activity I decided to use three different means of tracking the book reading. First, I used five sheets of paper with twenty books per page. We colored the books in as we read. (You can download the sheet of twenty books HERE.)
Secondly, I put three large envelopes on the wall: HUNDREDS, TEN, ONES. We added a straw to the ones for each book, and when we got ten of them they were put together with a rubber band and moved to the tens. Once we got ten bundles of ten then they moved together to the hundreds envelope. Now he gets to practice counting by ones and tens.
Finally, a sheet of paper was up to use for tally marks. Now he can practice counting by ones and by fives.
Now we have kiddos excited about reading AND we are sneakily teaching them number sense skills. Jackpot! I am so enthused about this activity that I have actually decided to do it again with my little girl, who is now in kindergarten. We started today!
I hope that you enjoy doing this 100 Book Challenge with your kiddos as much as I have!
