Burp cloths are easy to make. Simply use fabric Mod Podge for the perfect no-sew baby project. I love this holiday set as a baby shower gift!
Earlier this year someone that I love got prego, and I wanted to make her baby a gift the second that I found out. The only problem is that it was still far too soon to know the gender of her baby.
In pondering whether to make something lamely gender neutral I had this fun idea: holiday burp cloths. I have always wanted holiday burp cloths for my babies to match the ridiculous holiday getups in which I dress them, but I’ve been too lazy to do anything about it. So I bought some appropriate fabric and a bunch of cloth diapers and got busy.
I was going to quickly sew them together, like Courtney did for this Sweet Cs Designs tutorial last year, but then I decided to experiment with my Fabric Mod Podge instead. I hadn’t had a chance to use it, and I thought that No-Sew Burp Cloths may be a fun alternative burp cloth tutorial to put out there. In all honesty, I am confident enough at sewing that I could have sewed them much more quickly than doing it this way since I had to wait for them to dry, but this is a great option for those of you who don’t sew.
This tutorial is crazy straightforward and simple. Let’s take a closer look.
Making Burp Your Cloths
Step 1. Gather your materials. I chose to focus on the following major holidays: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, The Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Since it was the fall I couldn’t find holiday fabric for a few of the holidays that was as flagrantly holiday as I would have liked, but I did manage to find something that would work. Measure how wide you want the center strip of fabric on your fabric diaper burp cloths and cut the strips. Mine were about 4 1/2 inches wide and as long as the burp cloth.
Step 2. Slather on the Fabric Mod Podge, carefully line up your fabric and place it onto the fabric diaper. Smooth immediately and then let dry. When slathering the Fabric Mod Podge onto your holiday fabric be generous on the sides. If you do so you may be able to skip the next step.
Step 3. Once the Fabric Mod Podge has dried use a small paintbrush to touch up any of the edges that have curled up. Press down.
Step 4. Now fold, wrap, and gift your no-sew burp cloths!

I didn’t know that there was such a thing as fabric mod podge!! How exciting! I love your idea for seasonal cloths!
Lora says
How well does the fabric mod podge hold up in the wash?
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Honestly, not as well as I had hoped.

Very cute! I love the idea of making them for each season…pinning!!
Barb says
How do they look after they are washed? I’m assuming fabric mod podge is washing machine safe?
sarah says
You CAN wash it, Barb, but in all honesty I don’t love the way that they have washed up. They start to get pretty crinkly after awhile. I prefer to just sew them in retrospect, although this is still a fun option for someone without a sewing machine. I think this would work better on a small shape or something on a onesie.

I was concerned about the glue and a baby–
Sarah Westover McKenna says
It is non-toxic, but if you are concerned you can just sew them. I prefer sewing them, in all honesty. I feel like they wash up better over time.
