Today I want to share a tutorial with you for this sweet, simple nautical charm necklace. It will take you about 5 minutes to make. SERIOUSLY! 10 minutes TOPS. I have been lucky enough to work with the teenage girls at our church for the past few years, and this year the theme for our Young Women organization is “Embark in the Service of Your God.” Our group’s leader had the idea to give these nautical charm necklaces to the girls for their birthdays this year (you know, embark, embark on a journey, sail away, etc.). Naturally, I was asked to make the necklaces since I am a jewelry designer. They are SO simple and fun that I had to share with all of you, since they could be used for ANYONE who loves sailing or anything with a nautical feel.
For this project you will need the following: (Affiliate links below – Most of the following are from Hobby Lobby, but similar supplies can all be found online at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads, which is one of my go-to suppliers.)
- fine cable chain (this particular chain from Hobby Lobby)
- lobster clasp (this particular clasp is from Hobby Lobby)
- three small jump rings
- one large jump ring
- inital charm (this particular charm is from Hobby Lobby)
- ship charm (this particular charm is from Fire Mountain Gems)
- wire snips
- flat nosed pliers
Begin by measuring out 18 inches of chain and cutting it with wire snips.
Prepare the charms by opening the large jump ring slightly with a pair of flat nosed pliers. Thread the jump ring through the charm’s hole.
Open a small jump ring and thread it through the inital. Close the jump ring with your pliers and thread the large jump ring through the small one so that the charms are side by side, as shown above. Close the large jump ring and thread the chain through the large jump ring so that the charm is hanging from the chain necklace.
Open a small jump ring and thread it through the clasp’s opening. Thread the jump ring through the chain link on the end of the length of chain and close the jump ring, as shown above. Repeat with the other side of the clasp.
You are all done! Wasn’t that simple?? Enjoy your lovely new necklace!
