Give a lot of gift cards at Christmas? This mug gift card holder ornament is a cute way to present a gift card. But they’re adorable even without gift cards so you could also just make some up to decorate your tree!
I’ve got a tutorial and free pattern for you below.
This is a quick little project to sew. Because who has time for complicated sewing projects in December?? (Or complicated ANYTHING in December, amiright?) I was able to sew up several of these within an hour.
It’s also a great project to use up scraps. I just pulled out my scrap bins and had all the fabric I needed to make these. Even the “whipped cream” is from my scrap bin. It’s a bit of sherpa fleece left over from these mini mitten ornaments I made a couple of years ago.
I think the whipped cream topping is my favorite part. Which isn’t surprising because it’s also my favorite part of actual hot chocolate, lol. Finish it off with a candy cane for festive holiday touch.
It’s hard to see in these photos but these little fabric mug ornaments actually have a little bit of dimension. The front of the mug curves a little to give it a mug shape and to create the space you need to easily tuck in the whipped cream and a gift card (or other small gift).
So pull out your scrap bins and see what fun combinations you can come up with for Christmas mug gift card ornaments!

A word about this pattern:
This pattern is one piece (plus the handle) that folds in half to make the mug shape. The top and the bottom and nearly symmetrical with each other, but not quite, so it’s easy to get them mixed up. The top edge of the pattern is slightly wider than the bottom edge. That extra width will create a dimensional effect on the front of the mug. Because the top and bottom are so similar, it’s a good idea to double check the orientation of your cut piece with the pattern to be sure you’re working on the correct portion of the piece.
Prep
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the Mug and Lining pieces to either side of the 4 ¼” x 7” piece of Peltex to create a double-sided piece of fabric with stabilizer sandwiched between the layers.
Fuse the Handle pieces to either side of the 2” x 3” piece of Peltex.
Cut the Mug and Handle patterns from the fused fabric pieces.
Place the Mug fabric piece with the Main fabric side facing up. Use the hole punch to punch a small hole where indicated on the pattern.
Double check the pattern against the Mug piece to make sure you’re punching the hole in the right spot.
Sew the Heart Applique
Trace the heart shape on to the back of your fusible webbing.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the heart to the back of a scrap of fabric.
Cut the heart from the fabric, then fuse it to the Mug piece where indicated on the pattern.
Double check the pattern before fusing to make sure you’re fusing it to the right section of the Mug piece.
Top stitch around the heart to secure.
Assemble the Mug
Top stitch along top and bottom of the Mug piece with 1/8″ seam allowance.
Top stitch around the inside and outside edges of the Handle with 1/8″ seam allowance. You may want to hand crank the machine around the tight curves.
Turn the Mug piece so the Lining side is facing up.
Place the Handle along the lower right edge of the Mug, roughly ¾” from the bottom. Let the ends of tHe Handle overlap the Mug by about ¼”. Baste in place with 1/8” seam allowance.
Now rotate the whole thing 180 degrees, so the Handle is on the top left side.
Fold the Mug piece in half the short way, creasing at the middle. This creates the basic Mug shape. The edge you folded up will be slightly wider than the edge underneath. That’s okay. That extra width will give the Mug dimension.
Sew down the sides with a 1/8” seam allowance. The top edge will bow out a little when you sew that second side. Use a fabric clip to hold the edges even while you’re sewing the sides.
Knot the embroidery thread or crochet thread into a loop. Feed it through the hole you punched in the back of the Mug, then loop it back over itself.
Finally, stuff a small piece of sherpa fleece to create the whipped cream.
Your mug gift card holder ornament is finished! You can easily tuck a gift card in the back behind the whipped cream.
