* I was sent these frames by Cut it Out for use in my bedroom gallery wall. All ideas and opinions are my own.
I am so excited to share my bedroom gallery wall with you today! A couple of years ago I redecorated the main floor of my dad’s house, where we live with him, and the following summer I decorated my son’s Dr. Seuss themed room and my daughter’s nursery, but my own bedroom remained a wreck. Leftover posters from my sister’s high school years on the walls, random junk collected in the closet, an old, yellowing butterfly bedspread that I had used in middle school, hot pink and orange plaid window valance, and bright, multicolored glow-in-the-dark stars all over the ceiling. Yikes. Finally, in the fall I decided that I had put up with this mess for long enough, and that it was time to give myself and my husband a nicer space of our own.
I got these frames from Cut it Out way back in the fall, but I realized then that I probably wouldn’t get to realistically tackle this project until January. One thing followed another, some good and some bad, and eventually it was March and I was horrified that I still hadn’t made progress on this or the rest of the room. I got a burst of energy and worked at a frenzied pace for awhile, so the room has been painted and all of the furniture has been refinished, but now I have to pull together the details of the room. That is usually where I stall. My sister says I’m a starter. She speaks truth.
Now that I have FINNNNNNNNNNALLY completed this wall, I am reinvigorated about this project and hope to have the ball rolling. Hopefully you will see a finished room reveal sometime in May! Fingers crossed!
Now let’s take a gander at this girly glam gallery wall, shall we? I agonized over this wall. AGONIZED over which frames to order. AGONIZED over how to arrange them. AGONIZED over what to put in them. AGONIZED over how to decorate them. I am not exaggerating. It is an enormous weight off of my shoulders that this dang wall is D-O-N-E. And it is especially happy because I LOVE the way that it turned out!! Do you??
Let’s break down the process here. First things first, I ordered the frames. I have always been genuinely obsessed with the shape of the Cut it Out frames, and I have a longstanding love affair with unfinished wood frames in general, which I usually decorate for holiday decor. So, it should come as no surprise to you that when Cut it Out approached me about using some of their frames in a project I JUMPED at the opportunity! My sister saw these frames and was floored by how affordable they were. She paid WAY more for frames the same shape from a company which I will not name at the moment. Let’s just say that you should save yourself big bucks by being willing to paint them yourself. Besides, who doesn’t want to customize their decor to match their home exactly?! Silly question. 🙂
Here are the frames that I ordered and what I did to them:
* Tustin 8×8 (Round frame – taped off and spray painted gold on one half of the frame.)
* Oval 4×6 (Spray painted white, many layers of glittery lavender paint.)
* Grafton 2.5×3.5 (Small frame – spray painte gold with rhinestone buttons hot glued onto it.)
* Wall Letter M (Spray painted white, mod lodge and fine magenta glitter.)
* Balboa 11×14 (Spray painted with Rustoleum Hammered Silver spray paint.
* Balboa 8×10 (Hand cut silver vinyl stripes.)
* Oval 5×7 (Spray painted with Krylon spray paint, color: Sea Glass. American Crafts thin white glitter tape around edges.)
* Grace Oval 2.5×3.5 (Tiny, spray painted gold.)
* Parker 5×7 (Spray painted with Rustoleum spray paint, color: Aubergine. Silhouette double sided adhesive sheets used with a Cricut to cut a shape, glittered gold with extra fine glitter.)
Here is a few tip that I have for you when painting unfinished wood: SPRAY PAINT PRIMER! I always, always, ALWAYS use white spray paint primer to completely cover my frames/initials/etc before I add colored spray paint. It helps to keep the colors “true.” Also, spray in thin layers. If you just spray, spray, spray until it puddles it will dry funny. Trust me. I know from experience.
Here is a tip for planning gallery walls: WRAPPING PAPER MOCK-UPS! Move them around as much as you want to get the right arrangement prior to creating nail holes or hanging anything up. Which leads me to my next tip: 3M STRIPS! These things have CHANGED MY DECORATING LIFE!!! They come off easily (pull down like the directions say!) and are so simple to put up. That whole gallery wall . . . not ONE nail! All 3M strips. Amazing, right??
When I am planning gallery walls I always lay things all over the floor and experiment. Different types of mediums that bring in new textures and looks to make the gallery wall varied are always a good idea. I stand above it and try to get an overall feel for the color and texture as I go. As you can see, I have included not only some of my favorite pictures, but also a drawing of our family by Ink Puddles by Karin, with which I am obsessed, as well as a painting of my son by my personal friend Crystal Despain. I also included a printable from Key Lime Digital Designs. I usually throw an initial in as well to mix things up. On a large wall you may want to throw in a clock and a mirror as well. The other thing that I do is a variety of materials – spray paint, buttons, glitter tape, glitter, vinyl, etc. It’s fun to mix things up, and it gives your wall a more interesting and eclectic feel. (There are two other gallery walls in our home that I love, which I am going to be showing you this summer. I didn’t realize I hadn’t shared our reno/redecoration of the main floor! What the?!)
Now let’s just take a look at the pictures of the final product! EEK! I am so excited to finish the room now!
I hope this inspires you to grab some Cut it Out frames for yourself and create a unique gallery wall in your own home!
