Happy Friday!! I am SO excited to talk Martha Stewart Halloween with you today!! As I mentioned the other day, Martha is largely known to be The Queen of Halloween. So imagine my delight when I was asked to do a Halloween project using a bunch of fabulous Martha supplies, including Martha Stewart Decoupage. All Martha Stewart Decoupage formulas are dishwasher safe, machine washable, non-yellowing, dry hard with no tack, and can be used indoors or out. Additionally, Martha Stewart Decoupage Formulas and Finishes can be used on any surface such as glass, fabric, paper, metal and wood to create a lustrous finish. It’s the bomb.
I was simply thrilled by the box of supplies that I received, especially the GLITTER Decoupage and the GLOW-IN-THE-DARK Decoupage! How PERFECT is that for Halloween?! Michael’s has an amazing selection of Martha Stewart Halloween and other craft products, so grab a coupon and hurry on it for some super fun browsing! Now let me tell you about how I made this festive, spooky sign.
Here are the supplies that I used, all of which can be found at Michael’s:
* wooden plaque and letters
* Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Durable Matte Finish Decoupage
* Martha Stewart Durable Glow-in-the-Dark Finish Decoupage
* Martha Stewart Multi-Surface SATIN Acrylic Craft Paint in color 32056: Adobo
* Martha Stewart Multi-Surface GLITTER Acrylic Craft Paint in color 32155: Orange Sorbet
* Martha Stewart Decoupage Paper
* a strong glue
Start by painting the letters and the edges of the plaque with the the satin paint. (We painted the entire plaque because my son loved crafting and painting with me and REALLY wanted to, but it’s really only necessary to paint the edges.) I can’t say enough good things about this paint. I usually just buy the cheapest craft paint I can find, but no longer, my friends, no longer! It was so thick and luxurious! The color was perfect and rich and the coverage was AMAZING! One layer and I was good to go. That never happens! (On a sidenote….isn’t our painting tablecloth just stunning? It’s one of my mom’s old tablecloths that is so ugly that I let my kids paint on it. I really need to get a new one that will be less horrifying in blog tutorial pics!! Thanks for having fab taste, Mom. Heehee.)
Once the PAINT is dry add a coat of the glitter paint on top of the letters. It just adds such a fun POP of detail to have a little bling mixed in, don’t you think?
Add a layer of Glow-in-the-Dark Decoupage on top of the glitter paint. I allowed that to dry and added one more layer so the EEK would really GLOW! So fun!
Once the paint on the plaque is dry I chose my decoupage paper and I flipped the plaque over and traced the shape onto the back of the paper. Then I cut it out and used a layer of the Matte Decoupage to coat the plaque and glue the paper onto the plaque. Allow that to dry.
Once the paper is firmly glued to board add a thin layer of the Matte Decoupage to seal it down. Allow to dry and add one extra layer if desired.
Once your decoupage is dry use a strong glue to attach the wooden letters to the plaque firmly. Allow them to dry, and then hang it up! I used 3M Command strips to hang my plaque, which you can also find at Michael’s (probably near the framing section or the tapes).
I love the way that my EEK sign turned out with the spooky eye paper and the glittery orange letters, and my four year old LOVES how the letters glow in the dark! SO FUN! I will be using the Glow-in-the-Dark Decoupage on pretty much everything in sight from this point forward. You have been warned. 🙂
