Granny's Homemade Orange Rolls Recipe
  • For the Bread:
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 package yeast
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 3+ cups unsifted flour
  • For the Orange Spread:
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ grated orange rind
  • squeezed juice of ½ of an orange
  • 1 stick of butter, softened
  1. Dissolve yeast in ½ cup warm water and set aside.
  2. Melt shortening in the microwave.
  3. Combine melted shortening, sugar, salt, and hot water and beat to dissolve.
  4. Cool and then add egg, yeast, and cold water.
  5. Stir in 3 cups unsifted flour. (You may have to add a tad bit more flour depending on elevation, climate, etc. You don't want it to be too wet.)
  6. Stir to blend.
  7. Place dough in a bowl that has been pre-sprayed with cooking spray and cover with a piece of plastic wrap that has also been sprayed with cooking spray. (So that the dough is easy to get out of the bowl post-rise.)
  8. Rise until the dough has about doubled, about 1 or 1½ hours. (I usually place it in a warm spot or room.)
  9. At some point during the first rise, put together the orange spread.
  10. Once the dough has doubled in size, roll out the dough and spread with the orange mixture.
  11. Roll the dough into one large rolled log. Cut portions of it off so that you end up with spiraled rolls.
  12. Place the dough spirals into GREASED muffin tins.
  13. Cover the muffin tins (with roll dough inside) with a piece of lightly sprayed/greased plastic wrap and allow the rolls to rise for about 1 more hour.
  14. Bake for about 15 minutes at 375 degrees. (Keep an eye on them so they don't overcook!)
