Today I am here to share with you how I made the Downton Abbey inspired baby hats for my Baby’s First Tea Party. Did you see yesterday’s post about the party? It was the CUTEST! See for yourself!
See the full post with load of pictures HERE.
Now, back to the hats. I was lying in bed at 2 am (literally) the night before thinking about how I should have made the girls hats and how in the WORLD could I pull this off??? I tried to tell myself that I should let it go, but I just couldn’t. As one of my BFFs always says, I have serious personal problems. 😉 Don’t worry….it’s a term of endearment with her. And, let’s face it, she’s right! I do have problems. You will see what I mean as this post progresses.
When I woke up the following morning I checked my fabric stash. I had no jersey fabrics with stretch on hand (keep in mind this is two hours prior to the party), so I called a friend to ask if she did. She didn’t, but suggested that I cut up a t-shirt. Well DUH!! So, off I went to snag one of my husband’s big black t-shirts that he wears to bed and I started cutting and sewing. I used THIS simple tutorial to make the plain black hats. It was CRAZY simple!
Now it’s time to embellish! Grab a hot glue gun and loads of fun things. Whatever you have on hand! Flowers, buttons, feathers, rhinestones, lace, French netting, bows, or anything else! Then you start glueing like mad. Seriously. That is IT! Let me prove it to you. (Oh, and don’t worry, I had all of these supplies on hand. I told you . . . serious personal problems. I got most of them from Fleuriste Supplies, FYI. It’s the bomb.) 😉 If you don’t have fabric flowers on hand HERE are a few tutorials for you to learn how to make some. Each hat was different, but I am just going to show you the evolution of ONE of them.
Gather your supplies. Get mentally psyched up for fun while your glue gun is getting hot.
Glue on the lace (or French netting, which I used on two other hats). I fanned my with lots of dollops of glue.
Place your next item of choice on top of the lace and secure it with more glue. For me that was a gathered tulle flower.
Continue glueing items on top of one another until you like what you see. I started with the larger flowers and ended up glueing on the rhinestones and other tiny things onto the hats last. Be careful not to burn your fingers!
Ta Da!! Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
And now let’s see those precious baby hats in ACTION!
I need to nibble on their cheeks. Aren’t they perfection??
Man oh MAN are those girls cute!!
And there you have it! Downton Abbey inspired baby hats. I am so glad I’m insane and made them! They TOTALLY made the tea party, don’t you think?!
