Make your baby a Dopey the Dwarf costume for Halloween with this simple sewing tutorial. This is a great family Halloween costume idea.
Hey guys! It’s Laura, Sarah’s little sis, again with a few pics of our Halloween costumes last year. I know it might be a tad late in the game, but any other procrastinators out there? It’s not too late!
I wasn’t planning on doing much of anything for Halloween last year. I mean, my son wasn’t even one and couldn’t walk, so I thought it might be a tad weird to take him trick or treating (even though I really wanted the candy for myself). However, my sister kept insisting that he looked just like Dopey the dwarf. It wasn’t until she sent me this side by side comparison that I knew it had to happen.
The bald head, blue eyes, red nose, ears that stick out, and sweet expression? Too perfect to resist. I think the final product turned out pretty dang cute, don’t you?
I bought my Snow White costume (affiliate link) off of amazon for only $20. I thought it might be totally crappy, but it isn’t at all. I was so pleasantly surprised! The only cheap feeling part is that the skirt is totally sheer, so don’t say I didn’t warn you and wear a slip. 🙂
I made my son’s Dopey the Dwarf costume, but kept it pretty simple. I don’t have pictures of the process because I didn’t know I would be sharing, but I hope it’s pretty self explanatory.
What I bought at the fabric store: (note: these amounts are generous)
- One yard of pea green fleece for the shirt
- 1/2 yard of purple fleece for the hat
- 1/4 yard of brown fleece for the socks and belt
- Gold buttons
- Gold/yellow felt for patches and belt buckle
- Black embroidery thread for the stitching
- 1/2 inch elastic to hold on the hat
- 1/8 inch elastic to hold on the shoes
How I made the Dopey the Dwarf costume:
The top: I just cut out the shape of a baggy shirt with massive arms twice in the pea green fabric and sewed up the sides. Then I made a big tube of fabric and sewed it to the neck so that it would be a floppy cowl neck. After putting it on my son, I cut a slit up the front to make it look like his big baggy robe. Then I sewed on two gold buttons. I couldn’t resist cutting out squares of gold felt for patches, sewing them on, and then “stitching” them on with black embroidery thread just for looks.
The hat: Honestly, this was the biggest pain of all. I think I made about five hats because I really wanted that big floppy look. Sewing elastic to the bottom as a strap was essential to keep it on once it was truly big enough to look like Dopey’s.
The socks: Super simple. I cut out four elongated rectangles with one end curved and pointed. Then I sewed two together, made a casing, and put in skinny elastic at the ankle. I added a few stitches to made them look slouchy.
The belt: I cut a long skinny piece of brown fleece and sewed velcro onto the ends to make a closure. Then I cut out a rectangle “buckle” out of gold felt and threaded it on.
Voila! This Dopey the Dwarf costume was easy and oh so cute! Dopey wasn’t so sure about it at first . . .
but luckily he warmed up to it. Melt my heart!!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
