Floppy Ear Fleece Bunny Pillow – Free Sewing Pattern
I’ve got a cute Easter sewing project to share with you today! This floppy ear fleece bunny pillow is soft and snuggly, and would make a sweet Easter gift for a kid.
I’ve got a free sewing pattern and cut file for you below.
I’m kind of in love with those long floppy ears! And let’s talk about those teeth. Those bunny teeth just crack me up! Just a little bit of stuffing gives them dimension and makes them stand out. The eyes, nose, and whiskers are easily added with heat transfer vinyl.
The pillow has an envelope closure – but it’s not on the back where you’d normally find an envelope closure. Look closer at the front. The bunny’s mouth is the envelope closure! Putting the closure here makes a nice smooth back and also gives dimension for the sweet bunny face.
I made mine out of a white fleece, but he’d be cute out of any color of fleece. Pink or gray or even a light tan would be super cute!
You can make your bunny pillow extra snuggly by springing for the better fleece. The fleece I used was just a few dollars more a yard than the basic stuff, but it was sooo much softer! And since it takes just a yard, you can splurge without breaking the bank.
Are you ready to make your own floppy ear fleece bunny pillow? Here’s how:
Supplies
1 yard fleece
Heat transfer vinyl – black
Polyfil stuffing (just a handful)
14” pillow form
Free sewing pattern – Fleece Bunny Pillow
Bunny Pillow Face cut file – SVG file or .studio file
All seam allowances 1/2” unless otherwise stated. RST = Right Sides Together.
Prep
Cut all of your pattern pieces from the fleece. Also cut a 15” x 15” piece for the Pillow Back, and a 15” x 20” piece for the Bottom Face.
Sew the Teeth
Place the two Teeth pieces RST. Sew around the sides and bottom with a 1/4” seam allowance. Leave the top open.
Turn right side out. Lightly stuff with polyfil stuffing.
Sew a line down the center of the Teeth, through the stuffing, to divide the one piece into two separate “teeth”.
Create Bunny Face
Use your cutting machine to cut the Bunny Face design from the heat transfer vinyl.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to apply the design to one of the Top Face pieces. The design should be centered horizontally, with the bottom of the nose 1.5” from the bottom of the Top Face piece.
Place the two Top Face pieces RST. Sew across the bottom with 1/2” seam allowance.
Clip curves. Turn right side out.
Position the Teeth behind the Top Face so the Teeth peek out from the bottom like long bunny teeth. Hand sew (or machine sew) in place, being careful to only sew through the bottom Top Face layer.
Sew the sides and top together with a wide zig zag stitch. This will help keep layers from shifting later, and will also help reduce bulk.
Sew the Bottom Face
Fold the Bottom Face piece in half the short way, wrong sides together, so it’s 15” wide by 10” tall.
Sew the unfolded sides with a wide zig zag stitch.
Sew the Ears
Place 2 of the Ear pieces RST. Sew around the sides with a 1/2” seam allowance, leaving the bottom open. Repeat with the remaining 2 Ear pieces.
Clip curves. Turn right side out.
With the Ears right side up, fold the edges of the Ear to the center. Baste across the bottom with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Zig zag the bottom edge to reduce bulk.
Assemble the Pillow
Now to put all these pieces together!
First, baste the Ear pieces on the top edge of the Pillow Back – RST, raw edges touching and each Ear 1” from the edge of the Pillow Back. (The Ears will be pointing down, and the folded side of the Ears will be face down.)
Place the Top Front piece on top of the Pillow Back, RST and with top edges aligned. Pin in place.
Now place the Bottom Front piece on top, right side down and with bottom edges aligned. The Bottom Front will slightly overlap the Top Front. Pin in place.
Those long ears basted to the top of the Pillow Back create a lot of bulk and like to get in the way. I found it was easiest to pin the ears in half to help reduce the bulk and better keep them out of the way.
Sew around all 4 sides with a 1/2” seam allowance.
With all the layers of fleece, parts of this will be very bulky. Just sew slowly through the thick parts, hand cranking where necessary. If your seams don’t end up perfectly straight, that’s okay. Fleece is super forgiving.
Turn right side out. Place the pillow form inside the pillow cover. You’ve just made a floppy ear fleece bunny pillow!
And I couldn’t resist sharing this sweet little outtake. My kitty Mogli decided he needed to be part of the photoshoot. 🙂
