This delicious buffalo chicken dip is a simple recipe that is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Perfect for sports events and entertaining!
Good morning! It’s Sunday, and I know what that means to many people out there (men, at least) during this time of year: FOOTBALL. I’ll admit, I’m not a fan. At ALL. Although it is sort of exciting that my home team, the Denver Broncos, may go to the Super Bowl this year! Who knows….maybe I’ll even watch it. Or not. We will see. 😉 However, while I am not a professional sports fan in any way shape or form, I am a fan of APPETIZERS and tailgating food!!! YUMMMM!!!! And that is why I have teamed up once again with my favorite group of foodie bloggers to bring you 11 amazing Game Day recipes that are sure to please at any football viewing party, including the Buffalo Chicken Dip that I am sharing.
Before I share my recipe for buffalo chicken dip let’s take a look at the amazing goodness that all my blogging buddies have been cooking up for you….literally. 😉

YUMMMMMMMM, am I right?!?!?!? Alright, now on to my buffalo chicken dip recipe! This is a recipe that my friend Ann shared with me. It is SUPER simple. I couldn’t believe how quickly it came together! I will walk you through the steps quickly, and then the exact measurements will be below.
Gather your ingredients, including canned (or fresh shredded) chicken, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, and the key ingredient: Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce. Use cautiously….it is STRONG!
Dump everything into a bowl together after pulling aside some of the cheese for the top.
Stir it up!
Smooth the mixture into a greased casserole dish and top with the rest of the cheddar cheese. It is THAT simple!
Bake it until it’s bubbly and brown on the edges.
Serve it up with crackers or chips! YUMMMMM!
Rating
- 2 large cans chicken (or the equivalent of fresh shredded chicken)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (Reserve some for the top.)
- ½ cup - 1 cup Frank's Buffalo Hot Sauce (I use ½ cup because I'm a wimp.)
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 block (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- Set aside some of the cheddar cheese for the top.
- Mix all other ingredients in a bowl thoroughly.
- Smooth the mixture into a greased casserole dish and top with the rest of the cheddar cheese.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes until the cheese is melted and the mixture is beginning to bubble.
- Serve with crackers or chips. Best served warm.
Happy Football Watching!!

Oh Sarah, this is my favorite dip… and since being pregnant I’ve been craving all things buffalo sauce (minus wings)! Beautiful photos!
Kristin @ Yellow Bliss Road says
This sounds yummy Sarah! I’m a wimp too so would probably use even less hot sauce – ha!

I had a co-worker make this once! It is sooooo addicting! And I don’t even like buffalo dip but I ate a LOT of it!
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Me too. I’m not a buffalo gal, but I like this!
kristen says
Never! Ever! use canned chicken for this dip. I posted the “original” recipe on my Pinterest directly from the FRANKS RedHot site which states, shredded cooked chicken. Meaning the real deal. I learned my lesson the hard way, so to speak. Used canned chicken breast chunks from Swanson, not the store brand and it was disgusting. Like dog food. Poor dogs. All I could taste was the tin can. Never again. Even my sis said it would be amazing with real chicken instead. I am removing this recipe from my Pinterest and keeping the FRANKS version.
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Sorry you didn’t like it. I thought it was delicious. This is a recipe a friend gave me after I complimented it at a party. I am sure it is delicious with fresh chicken!
Amy says
or you could have used real chicken, removed the pin and kept all of that to yourself. instead you came to her site and chose to be rude. did that make you feel better about yourself?
the dip was delicious! thank you for posting, sarah!
Annie says
Agreed. I really don’t understand why so many recipes call for canned chicken, the texture is repulsive.
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Just substitute fresh chicken if it grosses you out! We think it’s great either way! 🙂
Lisa says
Is this dip something you can make ahead of time to pop in the oven later?
Sarah Westover McKenna says
I’ve never tried it, but I don’t see why not! I vote yes! Keep it refrigerated while it’s waiting, though!
Brenda says
Actually this dip is amazing not baked. It is great cold for tortilla chips or spread it on soft flour tortillas and roll, wrap in Saran Wrap and put in the fridge for two hours then cut into pinwheels.
Dana says
How many oz. fresh chicken would you recommend?
Sarah Westover McKenna says
I believe a can is 12 oz, so 24 oz of chicken?

Hey there! We had a last minute get together for the game (Go Pack Go!) and I was looking for some quick recipes to make to entertain our company! I ended up making this with the left overs from a rotisserie chicken and it was a huge hit! So so so stinking good! I also love that it only made a few dishes 😉 thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Sarah Westover McKenna says
You’re so welcome!!
Samantha says
How much does this recipe make? I’m trying to make it for a crowd of 65- 80 people, assuming not everyone will eat a lot, but people will probably taste it, and some will definitely have their share. Just don’t want to underestimate!! Thank you!!
Sarah Westover McKenna says
If I was making it for that many people I would double or triple it!! That’s assuming you also have other stuff there. 🙂 I think single would feed about a dozen people? Good luck with the huge party!
Lesley says
I just saw the comment about double and tripling this recipe…thank you by the way! But what if I’m making it for 250+? I would mix it and bake it in a large pan that would go in a chaffer. Any suggestions, comments would be appreciated!
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Gosh, I have no idea! Just make a whole bunch of batches I guess…..good luck!
Anne says
This looks so yummy! I would like to make a crockpot version, do you think I could change this recipe? If so, what would be the steps? Also, one more thing. About how many cups does this make? Thanks!
Sarah Westover McKenna says
Probably just follow the same steps but in a crockpot instead of an oven. The cheese won’t get crispy at all, though. I’m not sure exactly how much it will make . . . quite a few. I’m not a recipe adapting master, sorry. Good luck!
Katie says
This recipe was delicious! I used canned chicken in mine and it was fantastic. I couldn’t tell the difference from fresh, cooked chicken. Will make again and again! 🙂

Olivia says
I thought it was very good. But what is 1 C of cream cheese is that 1 pkg?
Sarah Westover McKenna says
I believe a package would be 2 cups. It depends on the brand, etc. It will show measurements and ounces on the box.
Jenny says
Yummy! As I was reading this I was trying to figure out if I had the ingredients in the kitchen. I can’t wait to try this. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday! Hope to see you next week!
