Hi, I’m Anne from Orange Bettie and I’m thrilled to be at Bombshell Bling today for Spooky Saturdays! I’ve got a fun tutorial for a flying spider bean bag to share with you.
If you have kids in the house, then you know the weeks preceding Halloween are packed with school parties, carnivals, Trunk or Treats, and other Halloween events. Bean bag games are a staple for parties and carnivals, so why not sew up a set of special Halloween bean bags you can use over and over and for lots of different types of games.
I’ve got a free sewing pattern and also a free cut file to make this silly little spider. Between his funny face and his floppy yarn legs, I think he’s a pretty cute guy! The pattern is super simple, so you can sew up a set of them in an evening.
I found some orange buckets at the dollar store to complete the game. You could also tape off some targets on the floor with masking tape or make a spider web target from a hula hoop and yarn. The possibilities are endless!
Hope you enjoy this quick little Halloween project! I’d love for you to stop by Orange Bettie sometime for more quick sewing and craft projects!
Materials
Black fleece
Chunky black yarn, 40” per spider
Heat transfer vinyl
Rice or poly pellets for filling, 1/4 cup per spider
FREE SPIDER BEAN BAG PATTERN (click here)
Free cut file for spider face – .studio format (Silhouette) or .svg format
How to make them
For each spider, cut two spider bodies from black fleece, and one spider face from heat transfer vinyl (use the free cut file).
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to iron the face to one of the spider pieces.
Cut 8 5” lengths of chunky black yarn.
Place the spider pieces WRONG sides together. Using the pattern as a guide, insert the ends of the yarn between the layers and pin in place. Make sure there’s at least ½” of the yarn between the layers of fleece so you’ll be sure to catch the yarn when you sew the pieces together.
I find it’s easiest to lay the pattern directly on top and place the legs for just one side of the spider first. Then, when you’ve got those pinned, place and pin the legs for the other side of the spider.
Sew around the spider with ¼” seam allowance, leaving a gap at the spider’s butt to fill with rice.
Pour ¼ cup of rice into the spider.
Use a pin to keep the rice pushed back away from the hole.
Sew the hole closed.
Knot the yarn near the end of each leg.
Your spider bean bag is finished and ready for your next Halloween party or carnival game!

These are so cute! I’m also having problems getting the pattern link to work. I’ve tried with both Chrome and Firefox. I have a Mac, so I don’t have IE; what browser are you using?
Thank you!
Cindy

I can email it to you if you need. I usually use Firefox and it’s working just fine. Sorry for the trouble!

If you could email the pattern to me that would be great.
Thanks so much!
