The Princess Bride Family Costumes

We were on vacation early last September when I realized that my son had a full blown mullet. My husband thought it would be funny to pull it into a nasty ponytail, and voila! Our Halloween costumes were born. Why? Because his little tiny pony looked just like Westley’s from The Princess Bride.

Now, I LOVE Halloween with all of my heart, so I decided that we needed to make it a family affair. (My husband is a less excited but still willing participant.) Don’t you think it’s much more fun as a family? I do!

I used my nephew’s old ninja costume and transformed it into a Westley costume by adding some neck lacing detail and a sash. That’s it! Then I borrowed some girl boots from another cousin and created a felt overlay to make them look like pirate boots. My son stomped around in those too big girl boots for a solid month after Halloween.

You might notice the second pair of boots. Those would be for my husband – Inigo Montoya. I used some cowboy boots we had from a previous Halloween and just cut out a felt overlay to make them look more Spanish. They are held onto the boots with elastic. Trust me, I just eyeballed it and it didn’t look fabulous up close, but it got the job done just fine.

I also had to make a vest and top for Inigo as well. I used an old white collared shirt and removed the buttons until halfway down, poked some holes, and threaded it with skinny fake leather cording. Then I cut out a brown vest out of cheap fabric and tied it shut. No sewing required. The rest of his costume was easy: wig, eyeliner mustache, brown skinny pants he already owned, belt, sword. Done. I made my Buttercup dress from a $5 thrift store flamenco dress. This is before with the neck ruffle tucked in. Forgive the awkward picture and baby bump – this was originally for my sister’s eyes only. But when that sister has a blog she talks you into things. 😉

I cut off the large ruffle at the bottom and used it to make puff sleeves. Then I bought some glitter elastic for my waistband and crown, threw on some “riding boots” and a long blond wig and called it good.
