Happy Halloween, friends!! Today’s post is all about family and group costume ideas for Halloween. I realize that it IS Halloween, so it’s pretty much too late for this post, but I have been meaning to do it and meaning to do it, and now I have finally done it. It’s done and ready for next year, I guess. C’est la vie.
I have gathered up family and group costume ideas from friends, acquaintances, social media, other blogs, my family, my mom’s old photo albums, and my own blog to bring you lots of fun group costume ideas. Some are super simple and some are very complex. Some have tutorials for how to make them and others were bought from Amazon. All are fun and sure to cause a splash at your next Halloween party. So, without further adieu, here are 30+ family and group costume ideas for your next Halloween. Happy Halloween!
FROZEN FAMILY COSTUMES on Bombshell Bling
One of my favorite Halloweens. I spent countless hours making these bad boys
prior to a Disneyland Halloween Vacay. It was worth it. See more HERE.
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!
I wish I knew who to attribute these EPIC costumes to, but I just found this picture floating around
on Facebook. I have never seen anything like it. My kids did Jack and Sally this year, but it simply can’t compare to this group perfection!! Whomever made those costumes is a master!
Here is our family’s attempt at Nightmare Before Christmas (affiliate link) costumes this year. My little girl was dying to be Sally, and her brother agreed to be her Jack when we took them to DISNEYLAND for an October vacay, including Mickey’s Halloween Party. I usually make costumes from scratch, but I didn’t have it in me this year, so I just bought what I could. I did have to buy her white tights and dye them blue because I couldn’t find blue ones small enough. Then I drew the stitches on the tights in a jiffy with a permanent marker. I bought Sally’s dress HERE. I bought the wig HERE. (It’s not the best wig ever – I’m sure you can see where there are spaces where the yarn doesn’t totally cover, but it was what I could find, so it worked. I just got some bobby pins and tried to pin the yarn around the head to cover more evenly. Someone at Disneyland actually stopped me and said that they loved how when I made the wig I left spaces so it looked like she wasn’t sewn well! Alrighty then.) I bought Jack Skellington’s costume HERE. (These are Amazon affiliate links.)
Brother didn’t actually want to be Jack, so we told him he could be Ash (Ketchum from Pokemon) for Halloween Day like he wanted to be, and we asked our girl’s crazy tall and thin grandpa if he would be willing to be Jack. He had never heard of Jack, but he showed up from out of state with this costume. AWESOME, huh?!
PETER PAN COSTUMES on Bombshell Bling!!!
This is another one of my very favorite Halloweens! Once again, it was spent in Disneyland with my family, wearing elaborate costumes. My MIL made Peter’s outfit and, most importantly, Hook’s coat, so I can’t take credit for that, but I made the easier stuff. Those costumes – particularly Hook and Smee – have been reused on many different Halloweens by my sisters and their families.
See more about our costumes HERE.
SCOOBY DOO CLAN!!!!
CUTEST, right?! My girlfriend made these for her kiddos. GENIUS, right?!
THE PRINCESS BRIDE FAMILY COSTUMES on Bombshell Bling
My little sister put these together for her family. SO funny and classic, huh?
See more on the post she wrote about it HERE.
DOCTOR WHO!!!
I have never ever seen Doctor Who, but I noticed right away how great this family costume was! These are some of our good friends, and they always do something great. You can spot them in Labyrinth and Addams Family getups later on in the post.
50’s SOCK HOP / GREASE COSTUMES!!!
This is a vintage pic of my Dad and me when I was young. My dad is cracking me up in the picture by our fireplace. Obviously, this idea could VERY easily be expanded into a bigger group.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES on Girl Loves Glam (No-Sew!)!!!
Aren’t these awesome?! They are so fun, colorful, and memorable.
PLUS, there is a NO-SEW tutorial for them on the Girl Loves Glam blog!! JACKPOT!
DARTH VADER AND PRINCESS / STAR WARS on t.aragon photo
Ummm..CUTEST!!!!!!!!! They must have caused SUCH a splash at Disneyland!
Of course, I saw tons of other families doing Star Wars as a theme. This is just one example.
Here is one more from my friend of Darth and his twins, featuring her son and his twin siblings
CLOWNS!!!
This is another pic from my mom’s photo albums from back in the day. Here you have my high school drill team and I dressed up as colorful clowns. This would be a pretty easy, and definitely fun, group/family costume to do, and you could add face paint to take it to the next level if you wanted to do so! I am the brunette pig-tailed clown in the blue polka dots laying on the ground in the front.
PUSHING DAISIES!
Here is a SUPER random one for you! Did you watch the show Pushing Daisies?
I think it was only on for one season, but we got a real kick out of it. SO quirky.
Apparently so did my friend, because her family dressed up as the characters one year. So clever!
THE AVENGERS on Bombshell Bling!!!
This post is a tutorial on my son’s Ant Man costume (based on the original comics outfit), and it also shows that we were all Avengers, but unfortunately I didn’t get a single good picture of us all together. Waaahh!! So here you have Ant Man with The Wasp and Ant Man with Hawkeye (a.k.a. the best natured dad in the world wearing a purple sweatsuit from the women’s section in Walmart to match the original comics outfit of Hawkeye). Not pictured is Mom as Black Widow wearing all black.
See more about how I made the Ant Man costume HERE.
Many, many, many, MANY family and friend groups go with a superhero theme, from young kids to teenage girls in tutus. Here is just one example – the kids of Kellie from Nest of Posies.
BANDITS! on Sugar Bee Crafts
These look so awesome, and I bet they’d be pretty straightforward to create!
See more about how to put them together HERE.
SAFARI!! (That’s me!)
Here’s a simple idea for you: a safari. Mom and/or Dad can be the safari adventurer, and the kids
can all dress up as any animals they want! This one offers lots of freedom of choice. The was the first year of my boy’s life. I was a young, new mom, and he was the cutest rhino ever! 🙂
GHOSTS!!! (NO- SEW, BTW!) on Bombshell Bling
Ghosts are a classic Halloween costume, but these no-sew ghost ponchos are a new twist on it. These two cuties are my niece and nephew, but my sister couldn’t get them to both smile for a picture at once. That’s ok . . . we can all imagine how ADORABLE they must have been trick-or-treating together! See more on how she made the ghost ponchos HERE.
POKEMON!!!!
This incredible group is brought to you by one of my best friends in the universe. She made the Pokeball costume she is wearing and got everything else from good ole Amazon (affiliate link). All that is missing is my boy dressed as Ash Ketchum, the famed Pokemon Trainer! 🙂
SNOW WHITE & DOPEY on Bombshell Bling!!
This is my sister and her adorable baby, who is a total Dopey look-a-like. In this tutorial she tells about how she made his costume. Obviously, this idea is easily expanded with more dwarfs!
Find out more about how to make this simple dwarf costume HERE.
LABYRINTH!!!!
Ok, these costumes – based on the 1980s David Bowie movie – are pretty epic!! I saw them in a group on FB and immediately asked the Mom of the group if I could use this pic in my post. Just . . . WOW. Here is another Labyrinth version, this one with just a couple.
THE FLINTSTONES from C.R.A.F.T.
Such a fun idea, right?! In this pic Jaime from C.R.A.F.T didn’t have babies yet, so she and her hubby were Fred and Wilma, but this costume idea could easily be expanded! See more HERE.
OLYMPIC ATHLETES!!!
This is my family mid-1990s at one of my mother’s brilliant birthday parties. She did the best creative, themed birthday parties without the help of Pinterest. Incredible. ANYWAY . . . whenever it was an Olympic year we had an Olympic birthday party with our friends or cousins. Everyone came dressed as some kind of Olympic athlete, and we had games doing things like silly races and crazy ring tosses trying to earn medals. I think this Olympic family picture looks just PERFECT for Halloween, don’t you? It would be a breeze to adapt for a family or friend group for Halloween.
DISCO on Among the Young!!!
Ok, is this the best ever or what?! The baby disco ball may be the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
Get all the details from my girl Kaylynn HERE.
ANGRY BIRDS on Sugar Bee Crafts!!!
No explanation needed — these things are AWESOME!
See how she put them together HERE.
DEVIL & ANGEL!!!
Obviously, this idea is only good for a group of two, but when I was going through my mom’s photo albums I couldn’t resist grabbing these pics to include. This is one of my best friends and I our senior year of high school. Borrowed Prom/Homecoming dresses from some friends with a few accessories and we were good to go! We actually wore them to school all day (!!!), and, I must admit, they were great representations of our real personalities. Haha! (I’m the devil, in case you didn’t know already.)
THE GRINCH & CO on Bombshell Bling!!!
The best. Just THE BEST. My sister’s family was the Grinch, Cindy Lou Who, and some Whos last year, and it’s just perfection. The sleigh that my BIL made?! UNREAL! See more HERE.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY !!!
These are some of our good friends — don’t they look amazing?! That fake mustache is cracking me up!
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS SUGAR SKULL COSTUMES on Capturing Joy with Kristen Duke!!!
I just LOVE this idea from my friend Kristen! It looks like you could wear a lot of your
own clothes, which makes things easy, with some accessories and a lot of face paint.
She gives more details on her blog HERE.
SCARECROW COSTUMES on Bombshell Bling!!!
Last year my daughter wanted to be “No Noggin” from the Curious George Halloween movie, and her scarecrow costume came together so quickly and turned out so cute that I threw together one for myself as well! I think this could be adapted so easily into a whole family of scarecrows, and it is surprisingly simple to make these costumes! Truly! See more HERE.

Now I want to feature two of my sister’s friends. I told her I was working on a roundup of group and family costume ideas and she said she had two friends who were THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST at it. She was not wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY COW these family costumes are amazing!! AND THEY BOTH SEW THEM THEMSELVES! Say WHAAAAAT?! INCREDIBLE. I bow down to both of them. Truly. They are the Halloween family costume queens and masters. Bravo, ladies. BRAVO. They also both happen to be bloggers, so I will introduce you to each one, and their blog, and then include the pictures below the personal intro. These costumes were NOT made FOR blog posts, so they don’t have links and tutorials, and some of them were taken at parties and stuff, not in a fancy setting. FYI.

Okay, the first one of my sister’s friends that I want to introduce to you is Celeste from I Believe in a Thing Called Love: a Blog About Marriage. Her blog is all about marriage and family, and it covers all sorts of topics, from having fun together to finding time for one another when you have young children to infertility to crisis in faith to supporting a spouse through severe depression and much more. My sister has actual guest posted for her (mostly about infertility), and she says that Celeste and her husband have a ton of fun together and seem to have a fantastic marriage, so she definitely respects their advice and opinions. Despite all this marriage wonderfulness, today we are going to focus on Celeste’s INCREDIBLE COSTUME MAKING/IMAGINING/SEWING SKILLS!!!!!! Just wait, guys . . . these are going to blow you away!! I believe my sister first described Celeste to me as “the ultimate master of incredible family costumes.” True story. 🙂 Celeste actually wrote an article on her blog entitled How to Rock the Family Halloween Costume if you are interested! Let’s just take a look . . . no more words needed!
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN!!!!!!
My favorite of her ideas! SO CUTE!!! I love this movie, and the outfits she made are just PERFECT!
MAGIC SCHOOL BUS!!!!!!!
Hey, I’m a former elementary school teacher . . . it goes without saying that I LOVE this costume!! Killer books and videos! Super fun, super educational, and super handy for an exhausted teacher! 😉
AMERICAN ICONS!!!
What a fun idea! I NEVER would have thought of this, but this is so great, and it could totally be expanded upon! Here we have a bald eagle, Rosie the Riveter, The Statue of Liberty, and Uncle Sam.
PONCHO VILLA!!!
Umm….she MADE those! INCREDIBLE, right?!?! WOW!
THE CHRISTMAS STORY!!!
Classic movie, incredible costumes! The lamp is fantastic, and can we
talk about what a great sport her hubby is being?! I just love it!!

Last, but not least, is my sister’s friend Amy from the awesome food blog House of Nash Eats. As a blogger who sometimes deals with food myself, I was *SOO* impressed when I headed over to Amy’s blog for the first time. Her recipes look absolutely scrumptious, there is a wide variety of types of food represented in the recipes, and her pictures are GORGEOUS! I actually think the most important thing in food blogging is pictures, and she has mastered it! I wish she was my neighbor so I could have her take photos of all of the things I make for my blog! 🙂 You should follow her Pinterest feed if you like pretty, pretty food! Before we talk costumes, let me make a detour for a second and show you some Halloween cookies I spotted on her blog that look delish. I know that’s kinda random, but Halloween is really about getting treats, right? 😉 Here they are: Dark Chocolate Halloween Chip Cookies. Grab the recipe HERE.
Yum, right?! They look SO good! I love dark chocolate. I can’t even imagine how good they must be warm and fresh from the oven! Ahhh….
OKAY, back to costumes. FOCUS, Sarah. 😉 Amy’s costumes are so dang cute, and my sister said Amy sews them all herself, too! Ummmm…..WOW. Color me impressed! The pictures are all totally fab and staged perfectly. It’s kinda like something from a magazine. She must be super into photography, between the fab family Halloween pics and the gorgeous food photography. Let’s take a look at her costumes!
OLD SCHOOL CIRCUS!!!
OMGEE so fun and colorful, right?! I just love it!! Love!
OLD SCHOOL MILITARY HEROES!!!
Aren’t these great? This look like they were taken on the set of a movie or something!
WILD WILD WEST!!!
I love the old fashioned wild west look of these costumes. Very cowboy
and saloon girl-esque. That dress is too fabulous for words!
THE LITTLE MERMAID!!!
This is my favorite of Amy’s costume creations before I am so obsessed with the skirt on that Ursula costume. PERFECTION! I *love* that their picture is on the beach! It must take her just as long to find spots to stage her photos as it does to make the costumes! Sheesh!
