For most of my life I didn’t know a thing about Di De Los Muertos. Luckily, one of my best friends is OBSESSED, and so she educated me to the awesome ways of Dia De Los Muertos. The following year I was visiting my sister in San Diego over Halloween and went to the Dia De Los Muertos celebration in Old Towne San Diego. It was pretty awesome. I’m sold! So, as you can imagine, when World Market told me that they were teaming up with the new movie The Book of Life and invited me to use that inspiration to decorate my home, well, I was all over it!
Before we peek at my Dia De Los Muertos display, and talk about why I placed it where I did in our home, let me give you a quick rundown of the movie The Book of Life. I actually didn’t know a thing about it, but I watched the trailer and now I am super excited to take my boy! We are a major movie-going family. I only with I could go with my Dia De Los Muertos loving friend and her kids as well!
Here’s the summer for ya: The Book of Life is an animated movie of a Romeo and Juliet-inspired love story set during a Day of the Dead celebration. Manolo (Channing Tatum) is a young matador who wants to shed the expectations of his family to follow his dreams of being a musician. His best friend, Joaquin (Diego Luna), is the successful pride of the town. The two best friends compete for the heart of Maria (Zoe). In order to win Maria’s heart and save her life, Manolo must face his greatest fears and follow his heart to rewrite his destiny.
Go watch the preview . . . it’s colorful, fun, and not at ALL what you are expecting, even from reading that description! I love color, and I love anything with a Halloween feel, so I’m definitely going to check it out! Oh, and guess what? It hit theaters TODAY, October 17, 2014!
Now let’s check out the colorful, fun Dia De Los Muertos display that I created, and be sure to stick around, because at the bottom of this post there are details on an AMAZING giveaway from World Market and The Book of Life.
I was super excited when I walked into World Market and spotted my options in their Dia De Los Muertos section of the store. Their Halloween Decor is always awesome! World Market also teamed up with The Book of Life to create a super fun Book of Life Collection of toys that my kids were totally drooling over!
This is a peek into my dad’s living room, with a touch of Halloween flair, of course. It’s our living room too — we live with him — but technically it’s his living room. He is the home owner and all. However, he let me roll with an idea for this living room that he was completely skeptical about at first. And then he FELL IN LOVE with it and asked me to expand it. He renovated and I redecorated his entire main floor about 18 months back, and I can’t wait to show you all of the reveals next month. In the meantime, feast your eyes on my FAVORITE part of the entire main floor makeover: my ancestor gallery wall.
I adore it. It features photos going back SIX GENERATIONS from me. I can’t wait to show it to you in more detail and tell you about some of these remarkable people next month when I do the home reveal! I love genealogy work and remembering my ancestors. The goody cloth skeleton is significant as well, because my late mother made it almost 30 years ago. It is still a favorite with the kids every year!
Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is all about remembering and honoring ancestors, and once I found that out my mindset about this style of holiday decor changed from “kinda creepy…” to “AWESOME!” I wanted to create a Dia De Los Muertos display in the living room on our tall tower of shelves in the corner so that it would be in the same room as my ancestors’ photos. I am really pleased with the outcome and the vibrant color pops it brings into an otherwise very tame room. Every last thing on the display is from World Market except for the creepy black cloth. I’m going to let the pictures do the talking now.
TOO FUN, right? Do you think you will be incorporating any Dia De Los Muertos decorations into your home this October?
