Are you looking for a quick and easy costume that you can make at home? If so, then look no further . . . these scarecrow costumes are for you! In fact, I was so surprised by how quick and easy my daughter’s scarecrow costume was to make that I decided to whip out one of my own at the last second, and I’m so glad that I did, because we ended up being quite a cute pair, if I do say so myself! 🙂
These scarecrow costumes came about due to this little cutie’s obsession with Curious George: A Halloween Boofest (affiliate link), a.k.a. a Curious George Halloween-themed cartoon movie. In the cartoon the plot largely revolves around a legendary scarecrow named “No Noggin,” who has no “noggin” (head) and comes out only on Halloween in order to kick the hats off of the heads of trick-or-treaters. Well, my little gal decided that she just HAD to be “No Noggin.” Oooookkkaaayyyy…… I wasn’t sure what to do with that request, so I decided to make her a cute scarecrow and give her a big hat so that she could pull it down and pretend she had “no noggin.”
It turned out pretty darn cute, huh?! Why does she have to grow up . . . WHY?!?!?! Ok, back to the tutorial . . .
This “No Noggin” scarecrow costume was surprisingly simple to make. The first thing that I did was take one of her big brother’s older white button-up shirts and dye it yellow. (Once I decided to join her I also dyed one of my husband’s older white button-up shirts yellow.)
Once the shirts were dyed and dried, I gathered up a pair of her brother’s too-small cargo pants, a straw hat, some loose straw, scraps of fabric from my stash, and a hot glue gun. First things first: cut the squares of fabric and pull the strings on the sides until the squares look ragged and worn. I also cute up some straw into shorter pieces.
Time to get gluing! I took the hot glue and glued straw into the pockets and openings of both the shirt and the pants. I think you can see that pretty well on the picture below.
Now I took some of the straw, crossed it over itself, and glued it to the shirt. Next I glued the frayed fabric squares right on top of it, but not covering it all the way up. I wanted it to stick out from behind the fabric like the straw was coming out of her little body. Sometimes I pasted extra straw on the first square and a second, smaller square crooked on top of one the other one to give it a more varied, authentic look.
Once that was done I repeated the process to add hay and fabric squares to the pants and the hat. (I only had a shirt, but she had all three items of clothing.)
We added some braids in our hair and some face paint on our faces and we were all set!
The little lady was pretty excited about being able to turn herself into “No Noggin” as well! Heehee — I love kids!
Our costumes ended up being extremely simple to throw together, and they were a huge hit at the parties we attended and trick-or-treating! I call that a success, don’t you?!
