I am a rather sentimental woman, especially when it comes to my children aging far more quickly than I would like. Sometimes I turn around and see my son and feel a genuine moment of shock that I am looking at a little boy, not a baby. I do not care for babies growing up. Not in the slightest. And yet, they do.
For this reason, I am a mother who takes a ridiculous number of pictures and who is always trying to come up with sentimental little art projects that will preserve a precious childhood moment in time forever. So, naturally, when I was approached about reviewing the Snowprints Handprint Ornament for Pottery Barn Kids I was so excited that I squealed aloud. Literally. One of my all time favorite stores and a chance to make a sentimental ornament?! Um, yes, please! (You will hear more about my Christmas ornament obsession on the blog soon, I promise!)
Have you ever been in a Pottery Barn Kids? Well, if not, then you, my friend, have been deprived. Head to the mall and prepare yourself to crack open that wallet, because it is nothing shy of Mama Paradise! I swear every time I walk into that store I just gawk because I can’t believe that I love everything that I see. I was gushing to my little sister the other day about how badly I want one of their Christmas countdown advents, and I believe I told her that I wanted the Hanukkah one as well, just because it was that beautiful. I may have a problem….
Seriously, though, it is such a fun store! It isn’t just furniture and bedding, it is also toys, books, keepsakes, and more! I think it is the perfect place to buy unique baby shower gifts or a gift for any special event in a child’s life. My sentimental side could go nuts over all of their keepsakes!
Alright, now that I am done gushing (and drooling), let’s get down to business: The Holiday Handprint Ornament.
What did I think? Well, I loved it! Truly! It is the same concept behind salt dough ornaments, but so much simpler, and the smooth finish is much classier and more professional looking than dried salt dough. I chose the glitter option to preserve my little lady’s handprint. After all, she is my little Drama Queen.
Look at that little hand…..it needed to be captured in time, right?! I think so! (And don’t worry, a tutorial on how to make that headband is coming soon….)
Time to get started! It’s crazy easy. Ready? First take the marshmallow clay out of the pouch and knead it for a few mintues to get the air bubbles out. Now roll it out, but not too thin because you need enough clay to press that little hand into. Now press that tiny hand!
Choose the appropriate size of circle cutter remove the extra clay. Use the straw to punch a hole. Now it needs to dry for about a day, flipping over halfway through. Yes, that’s it! If you aren’t going for the blingy glitter you are essentially DONE! Easiest grandparent gift ever, right?!
Personally, I was so taken with the ornament at this stage that I made an ornament of her tiny foot as well!
Oh, and big brother didn’t want to be left out either! The extra clay was used to immortalize the “footprint” of his Jeep. Cutest boy ever.
If you chose the glitter then once your ornament is dry you will need to paint on the glue, pour on the glitter, and shake off the excess glitter. Let the glitter and glue dry and add a ribbon.
Viola! So darn cute, and now I can look at those tiny prints for years and years to come.
[Can’t forget the tire’s ornament!]
If you are interested in finding one of these ornaments you can grab them in the store or online. But don’t wait, because I bet they are going to fly out the door long before the holidays arrive! (Especially since I noticed that they are on sale right now, at least online!) My son and I went on a special “date” just the two of us to purchase ours. He happily played with the amazing toys and displays in the store while I browsed. And then we each got a cookie from the food court. Now that’s my kind of date!
Happy shopping!
