Hello Bombshell Bling readers! My name is Jes and I blog over at Mommy Envy. I write about my DIY adventures, recipes, photography, and my family. I am really excited to share with you this easy DIY chalkboard tutorial.
I’ve wanted a chalkboard in my home for a while. I love the fact that I can change it up for the season or with a motivational quote. And you can make your own for much less than it would cost in the store. I like to purchase frames at thrift stores; especially on days certain tags are half off. Even if they don’t match it’s easy to paint them.
This project uses chalk paint and chalkboard paint. These are two different kinds of paint. Chalk paint is great when you want to avoid prep work. I use chalk paint all the time. I’ve used chalk paint on furniture, like this red dresser and even my kitchen cabinets! I typically have left over chalk paint from a project and I use it on my collection of frames. Chalkboard paint is paint that, once dried, allows you to write on it.
DIY Chalkboard Tutorial
You can make your own chalk and chalkboard paint. For this project I used a spray can of chalkboard paint. The key is to use several light coats for even coverage. I used a primer spray paint first but only because I had it on hand you don’t have to do this step. Be very very careful with the glass. I was working with a broken piece of glass the week before starting this project and cut my finger.
My chalk paint recipe is easy – 1/3 cup Plaster of Paris with 1/3 cup water, mix well, then add 1 cup paint (sample size in any color) and mix well. It will be slightly runny so watch out for drips but it has great coverage. I bought this green from the oops paint section so it only cost me $0.50!
Typically I tone down the brightness of a color with a dark stain that I rub on but I had some grey left over from another project so I dabbed the grey on the raised surface of the frame with a paper towel.
I love bright colors so I knew this was something I could use year round. I’m not a big fan of writing with chalk though so I found a chalk pen which I absolutely love! I just recently painted my kitchen cabinets and I’m thinking of adding some chalkboard paint to one of the cabinet doors.
